Christmas 2011

Koki came down ill this Monday after coming back from a day care.  He threw up several times and it is now Saturday and he is recovering from his diarrhea, last phase. We know this from last year , for Koki caught rotavirus around the same season last year and Toru and I both came down with it too.

With my grandma's grief, I will not be sending a new year message, but I wish you all the best and hope that you come back to read my blog in year 2012 as well!

All the best,
Yuko

のんびり、と - a day off

Christmas gifts and Koki

Last Saturday was an early Christmas party at our place.
Koki was happy to receive his favorite The Cars toy and a Pra-rail toy from his grandpa/ grandma and auntie/ uncle. My mom made a delicious quiche and brought gourmet cheese, ham, and breads which were accompanied by a good Australian wine my father in law gave me as a Thank-you gift for doing a little favor.  Kids were excited to see an ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins.

Because Koki was over-sleeping and I have a 4pm dentist appointment, I decided to call it an off today. After taking Koki to his day care, I spent a long an hour and half shopping around my neighborhood.  I  even researched several drug stores to see price differences on cleaning items (in Japan, we do a major house cleaning before the end of the year to get rid of bad and welcome in good).  It ended up being not much, so I bought them at a store I usually buy to accumulate shopping points on my point card (these 'point cards' get accumulate in my wallet that once in a while, I do a cleaning here too).
My grocery shopping also felt almost fun not having to worry about time. I usually rush through a super market to do shopping in 10 minutes or so before I go pick up Koki from his day care.

It looks like I will start another job from the new year.
A rist management company owned by and an American guy who has partners in London, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and has client and provides service globally.  I will manage Tokyo office under his supervision.  This job can be done remotely and on my own terms in terms of time and how/ where I work, so I decided to take on.

Year of Dragon is already looking like a busy year!

紅葉, trees in autumn colors

I complained a bit about my working environment and after that I realized (at last...) it is easier to change my mind set rather than expecting people to change, you cannot expect people to change, thats the worst thing you can do. You can always change yourself (just like how Michael Jackson sings in his infamous Man in a Mirror), because you are yourself.

My office stands on a top of a hill from Nagatacho to Kojimachi, an old business town with National Diet Building nearby, but not much more.  Lunch tends to be fairly high priced compared to other nearby business areas like Akasaka Mitsuke or Tameike Sannoh which time to time I go down to have "one-coin" (500 yen) lunch with my ex co-worker.
Yet, I am starting to like the area because there are no kids running around which can be a disaster especially on lunch out (limited break time, precious). Plus, it has many cafes such as Starbucks or Tully's (Japanese version of Starbucks) which enables me to get away from a working environment during a 60 hour lunch break during which I usually read a book with a cup of coffee plus something.

There is a mid size park right next to the building I work in and from my desk I see tress outside a nearby window which is quite nice.

I am getting adjusted to the environment finally.

New kitchen gad

First rain boots and an umbrella
My ex co worker and a good friend gave me two employee sale tickets to go to.

Friday was a cosmetics and beauty company. Another friend of mine and I got to a sales venue 15 mins before it was to open and already there were 1000 people waiting ahead of us!  We left the place and did other shopping, had lunch, and still it was way before our turns, so we headed home.

Saturday, a German kitchenware company. I took Koki on a bus ride with me to the venue. 10 mins to the start and there were about a dozen people waiting, so we decided to wait. I purchased a stainless frying pan which I have been wishing to buy for a long time now, with 50% discount from its original price and a cutting board whichi is made out of a plastic that prevents food odor and chipping.
We stopped by at a baby store in a same building and bought Koki's rain boots, baby wipes, baby tooth brush  jambo pack etc. Koki was happy to ride a bus again back home.

As soon as I got home, I cooked an omlette with a new pan. Heat it well, cool it for 10 seconds on a wet cloth, heat it on a small heat, cook. This is few steps added to a regular cooking, but it sure is worth it because a stainless pan does not have any coating on it which may come off and gets into cooked food for us to consume.

Recently I watch what I buy more closely.
I am slowly moving away from a mass consumption life style to lead a simple life style.

Staying simple and focused, a step closer to enlightment.

Facebook

I neither update nor even open Facebook nowdays.

I used to be hooked when I frist started (just like anyone who just started).
Back then I only had my good friends on my list, but after a few years, especially after it became globally well known, I received so many invitations from not only friends but also acquaintances whom I don't even know that well and I confrimed too many of them (and I myself too probably made many out there confirm me too).

The reason I stopped updating Facebook was initially because there are just too many people on my Friends list whom I don't necessarily need to share my personal photos with (they are probably good people, but anyhow I feel uncomfortable that they peek on my profile, photos, etc.).

Today I found an option fo "unfriend" people from my list and viola, my list is down to one third.

This whole SNS thing I am not so crazy about, but at least I now only have friends who are really friends on my list.

Unfriend-ing someone is surely not a friendly thing to do, but after all I doubt if those I unfriend-ed would even care. Plus, I update my dos on this blog, so if you ever wonder what the heck I am doing recently, come see me here.

Boys are boys

"Good to see you, mate".

A rainy it was today. It was cold rain. Beginning of winter season.
Koki and I usually go to a bakery & cafe in neighborhood for a breakfast on Saturdays, but today we stayed home. I dripped my own coffee and we had donuts from Krispy Kreme.
Koki had a snowman donut with white chocolate coating and strawberry filling. I was waiting to finish my donut as the snowman was pretty big and I did not expect Koki to finish it all.
Unexpectedly he finished it all, and pretty quickly too shouting, "amai! (sweet)".

Yesterday friends and their baby came to pick us up at 10 am in a morning to go play at a park.  As both of the boys were coughing and with bit of runny nose, we skipped a swimming class which Kyle (their baby) goes every Friday and Koki was in for a trial lesson. We led the boys play in a park all morning and then drove to a shopping mall and had lunch together.
It was new for me to see Koki play with a boy because he usually plays with his girl friends as my mom friends all have baby girls.  He plays with lots of boys at a day care but I don't get to see them play usually.I realize at age of 2 years and 7 months, boys need to play with boys.
At age 2, boys and girls start to play differently from each others. Boys tend to be aggressive where girls tend to be gentle with toys (of course, there are lots of exceptions). Even the most tomboy girl friend Koki has, Koki always anyhow makes her cry when they play together and this can be stressful sometimes.

Well, moms are moms and kids are kids, we will find a good balance.

Its been 3 weeks since I started a new job, an assistant to an American guy who runs his consultancy business here in Tokyo.  I sit in his client's office everyday since he does not have his own office, instead he has his desk inside his client's office in Nagatacho, Tokyo.

It sometimes feels weird and somewhat lonely to sit and work within a large number of people who I do not work with or report to. Having no co-worker is certainly free of stress since I am free of politics inside a company which any mid to large organization is bound to have.

But, I can use some company if you ever come around Nagatacho or Kojimachi area around lunch time.

This is my recent dos.

ひさびさ - stoke is back!

Flat with occasional knee to thigh high set

For the first time in last 2 years or so, I surfed, with a friend of mine who runs a private surf lesson. Toru and I have been trying to get out there, but with earthquake, typhoon, and no car, we have been forced to postpone every time. Toru is into golfing more nowdays and he is planning a weekend golf trip with his friends this weekend. I am still into surfing tho I am no longer an active surfer, and every time I gave up, it accumulated within me.

I left my previous employment at beginning of this month and there were few weeks ahead before I started my next job (which started this Wed) and so I took this chance to email up my friend to take me to the beach. Though it was almost flat, I still managed to catch some waves and of course, a total stoke.

Driving back into Tokyo was very bizarre, it felt like I was flying back in after a long trip out of Japan or something. What is supposed to be a everyday scenes seemed like something different for me anyhow.

Oh how I love surfing, how wave feels beneath a surfboard I am on, how it pushes me gently as I struggle to catch and ride it...

This is called stoke. Stoke coming back once again in my life.

Halloween things

Our Halloween decoration

Halloween is getting its recognition and event-citizenship in Japan through past few years.  Just like Christmas, people in Japan tend to start decorating much earlier than US. As soon as we hear autumn wind blow and feel temperature decline, we start seeing pumpkins here and there.
I do not know how this whole Halloween craze started in Japan but it is certainly fun with colorful decorations. Koki loves it too and he will go trick or treating with his pirate costume from the sports event few weeks ago on the last date of October with his friends at a day care.
I myself bought a rainbow colored afro wig off a small shop with a big discount for it being on a display.

I am trying to think what we can do fun with Koki on Halloween.

あつまり - a small family event

Ueno Zoo

On Saturday afternoon, my mom, my sister and my niece, my aunt, my grandma's cousin and her daughter (they live close by) came to our house for lunch. Koki was happy to see everyone but especially his 3 year old (soon to be 4 years old) cousin Kazusa. Last time she came, Koki was not ready to share many of his favorite toys, but this time he was eager to share all his toys and have fun with her. They ran around our small condo room with toys in their hands.

Again, when I was a child, my mom's family, because everyone except for an aunt who came on Saturday lived in a same neighborhood,  used to gather around all the time at my grandma's house (she passed away this March). Children would sit in a small room and have lunch or dinner and parents and adults would eat in a bigger, fancier room with chairs and tables. Children used to have to knock on fusuma doors (old Japanese style sliding doors or panels) when we entered the adult's room. There used to be distinct atmosphere of the adult's room which felt like going into a principal's office or something.

Yesterday being a holiday, we went to a zoo. Koki was happy to see real elephants, a gorilla, a giraffe, etc. walking in front of him.  Because it was a holiday, the place was packed with families and young couples. I hope to go back again on a weekday then maybe we can get a closer look at pandas which had a long waiting line.
On our way back, we stopped by at Toru's grandma's house. His parents were also there and we had dinner together.  His grandma lives in a small 2 story house where Toru's cousins used to gather around when they were little.
Now grandma's 93 years old and since she lives alone, Toru's mom takes turns with her sister (Toru's aunt) and stays with her.

A great weekend.

運動会 - sports day

A pirate
We participated in a sports event held by Koki's day care.

Maybe because I prepared his costume and did some coloring on flags to ornament the event, I enjoyed the event very much.

At first, it felt little embarrassing doing physics in front of a crowd (for some reason, every family, and us too, had one parent doing physics with his/her child and the other taking photo or video), as I got used to it, it became fun.

Koki's class (2 year olds) ran a race and an obstacle race (a pirate costume comes in here).  I did some dances with Koki for warming up before and in between those races and Toru ran with Koki in an obstacle race.

Before I became a parent, I used to think it must be dull or tiresome to participate in this kind of school events, but I found out that it can be fun. I actually had a good time last Saturday.

Koki slowly started his potty training when he was 1 and 10 months old or so.
We bought him a kid's size toilet seat for him and time to time we take him to sit on it so that it gradually sinks into him as a habit.
Few weeks ago when I went shopping with my friends and their babies to a baby store, I bought him a new underwear so we can take the potty training to a next level. Hands on (or butt on?).
So far he tried four times and yesterday after wetting his first underwear (blue one with robots on it), he changed to his second one and ate lunch. After lunch I took him on a potty and though he claimed "nai (nothing)", I led him sit on it for few more minutes and viola! He did both number 1 and 2.

Right now it is hard to imagine some day he will go to a restroom without telling us and be done with his business before none of us notices.  Some day but in parents' years, soon, I guess.

Oh, there he goes, just woke up, gotta go.

Respect for the Aged Day

Tea time

We took 3 trains to visit my parents' house for Keiro no hi (Respect for the Aged Day). This is the day I used to gather around at my grandma's house when I was a kid with my cousins, aunts, and uncles to go to nearby shrine where a big festival (matsuri) was taking place. By then my great grandma was still alive and it was a big family. I had 6 cousins plus my 2 sisters with me and we all used to hang around at our grandma's house all the time.  Now I am a parent, I wish I had a similar gathering at my parents house or my aunt's house or whoever's house, but time has changed and people live differently now days and it is very hard for everyone to gather around in one occasion.

This weekend there was another festival in a neighborhood (different shrine and only one shrine this time, but matsuri much bigger) and since mikoshis rested in a little tent set up in front of our building, we got to see mikoshis marching 3 times.
Yesterday there was a small mikoshi for children and since Koki is still too little to participate in a march, he got to beat a big drum with me before the marching crowd started.

I am looking forward to wearing a matsuri costume (tabi socks, happi jacket etc.) with Koki to participate in a march in a few years. It must be fun.

Quench your thirst

There was a big festival (matsuri) in our neighborhood last weekend. We forgot about it but as we were strolling by in a shopping arcade, a mikoshi came.  Mikoshi is a portable shrine taken out from a shrine at every festival occasion to worship the god.
We then went to one of shrines participating in a matsuri (all together 7 shrines= 7 mikoshis in  this matusri) to pay respect to its god since this is the shrine we went to for Koki's omiyamairi (Japanese tradition to go to a shrine to pray for child's health and happiness on 30th day from brith).

This weekend Koki's down with fever and swollen throat. We are going to stay home and do some craft for Koki's costume for his undo kai (a sports festival). He will be a pirate. We bought glue, origami, ribbons etc. to decorate his costume.

Have a nice weekend!

At a local restaurant
Lots of over time work past few weeks and Koki's been spending more time at his day care, sometimes till 8 pm or so. As much as I understand about limited resource at small to mid size company and that each staff needs to do what he or she can do,  with daily house chores and Koki, both Toru and I was starting to wonder if I should look for a part time better paid position, even if it being a dispatch type of work (currently I am on direct - part time contract with full social benefit).

However, moving on as I think is not always the best answer as there is no definite promise of a better land and dispatch jobs decreases as I passed the 35 year line (they say 40 is another age line for jobs), I am starting to think it better to hold the ground.

Typhoon #12 has been on news since Thursday and people have been on its alert for 4 days now with expected heavy rain and strong wind.  It is now Saunday.  Scattered showers but no heavy rain yet.
I bought so much veges and meats for the weekend cook and store plan.  I made home made pickles (carrot, cucumber and raddish) hoping Koki would consume veges, lately he dislikes veges unless it is minced into hamburger or something.

I still have lots of food in my fridge, I need to cook them up by end of today for freezing stock.

Let's hope less overtime this week.

Weekend

Tomika world

Acquarium

We took Koki to an aquarium once again and to Tomica toy exhibition.
Koki did not seem to enjoy the aquarium as much as last time and was sad to find no sea turtle.  We sat in to watch dolphins and a small whale perform, but Koki fell asleep in the first five minutes of the show.  On our way back, we stopped by at Outback Steakhouse and had a glass of beer for each (Koki had a glass of orange juice), Toru and I shared a plate of nachos, and Koki had a kids meal with baby back ribs.  Lately Koki does not enjoy eating out as much any more. The only thing he eats is french fries, no meat.  At home or at his friend's (Lea) dad's bar he eats anything, but anywhere else he just won't eat.   I guess I should be happy about it, better to eat at home, right?

On Sunday we took a long train trip to Makuhari where Tomica toy exhibition was taking place.  Tomica is amazing about their realistic replica of trains that will run on pra-rail (train rails sold from Tomica as well).
Because Koki asks me to go through books on trains and cars, I am starting to recognize different trains by their design etc.  In Japan, we call people who are overly passionate about things "otaku" and there is a word dedicated for mothers who become otaku of trains as their kids get into them, "mama tetsu" (tetsu is an abbreviation for "tetsudo" which means "iron road" a rail road) and I guess I am becoming one of them.

I am opening another door to a new otaku world....

Early morning run

We took turns being sick during our Obon break.
Thanks to Toru's mother who took care of us all through obon, we rested well and managed to visit my parents down south. Otherwise, we stayed home and did not do anything particular, but it still was a nice obon breank staying home with our families.

I woke up early morning twice this week without an alarm clock and I went for a half an hour run in a nearby park. It's been a while since I run last. It feels so good to exercise. Now that I don't surf that often any more, I haven't done an excercise in any way for a while and my body tells me it is about time I got back to regular exercise mode.

Because Koki is so active and outgoing, I want to do something with him. Some kind of dance because he loves dance and music? Or maybe swimming because I love to be in water, or possibly some form of martial art at a dojo.

It's so fun to even think about what we are gonna do!

Have a nice weekend.

Obon break

shot by iPhoto

Hot, hot, hot, Tokyo is burning these days!
It easily goes up to 35 C degree in AM and stays at that until late PM.
Because Tokyo has so many sky scrapers which run tons of air conditioning all day long, heat produced from them along with that from sun get caught inside the city, a heat island phenomenon.

Due to power shortage, everyone is saving on electricity and especially business entities are enforced by law to save electricity by specific figure.
Some companies have early start early leave or late start late leave schedule for employees to avoid electricity usage during the peak hours. My workplace doesn't have it and I work from 10 am to 5 pm sweating, a fan in my left hand, mouse in my right hand, iced water on my desk.

Well, we all need to do what we can.

My short obon break starts today. Toru's started from this Monday already.
We have been meaning to take Koki to a "real" beach during this break, but just before it starts, he comes down with fever. His fever is gone this morning and playing hard inside.

Due to power shortage and abstaining atmosphere from 311 disaster, many festivals and firework events are cancelled this year. Too bad. I am sure people in disaster area need them more than anyone else to forget about 311 even if it is just for a while.

We plan to go see both of our parents, we haven't seen them in a while (especially my parents who don't drive any more). Tomorrow morning, I might pay a visit to my grandma's house to participate in nee bon (new bon) ritual to welcome back my grandma (this is Buddhism ritual to welcome back ancestors; it is new for my grandma because this is the first bon she experiences after her death in March this year).

This is a typical Japanese obon break.

遠征 - a trip to Jindaiji

Myth of Tomorrow, Taro Okamoto

Koki rode 4 trains, made 3 transit to visit my friend and her 10 month baby who live just outside central Tokyo.
They bought a 2 story house 3 years ago and it still looked quite new with smell of new built house. My friend came to pick us up from a nearest station and from there she drove about 10 minutes to the house.
The area was a residential and had many houses but only a few condos.
Very different from where we live, which is right in center of central Tokyo.

There was another friend of mine and she is 8 months pregnant. Next time we go see her baby at her house probably.  It is always so much fun and dearing to chat with my friends.

Few years back Tomorrow's Myth (a wall painting originally created for a hotel in Mexico by Taro Okamoto. Later found in a garbage and brought back to Japan) finally found its last resting place in a concourse of Shibuya station.  I went to see this painting twice when it was exhibited at a museum and have been meaning to come see it again at Shibuya station.
Luckily the concourse is located between 2 train stations we made transit, so Koki and I sat down against a window and observed the art for few minutes (Koki was looking outside a window wathinc a famous Shibuya cross).

Have a nice weekend!

This week has been over time week.
Though I told my bosses that overtime needs to be arranged before hand, it (inevitably) occurred and because it is a last minute request Koki's day care charges 1200 yen (about US$15) an hour plus snack (upon request, 200 yen; dinner is 400 yen), it turned out that I was not making much money for the overtime hour.
With overtime, I finished up drafting up a consignment agreement referring to available resources online and then translating it into English so that my boss can take it to Indonesia trip to have a local vendor sign on it.  Now, this was something totally out of my job scope at the interview, their explanation was to "get ideas" and then transfer them to a lawyer so he can draft up.
Things like that is starting to take a toll on me as days go by. As much as I tell myself that first few months is trial period and to get used to new environment, not to expect too much, lay low (this is sort of particular esp. in Japanese working environment, I think), things are starting to build up inside me...

Agencies still contact me time to time and if it so happens that something attractive comes up, maybe I should not hesitate but apply.

Enough for my complaints.

Koki is starting to show his tidy side of personality.  He likes to align car and train toys neatly, or he likes to put block toys by colors etc.  Not my trait, definitely.. interesting. He loves cars and trains, definitely a boy!

sharpin

This is a 3 day weekend and we went to Odaiba Beach because Koki shouted out, "Sharpin iki tai! [I want to go sharpin (surfin)!]" as soon as Toru woke up.  This time I did not tell him to say it to his dad, he just said it himself.
He says he wants to go whenever he sees image of ocean or beach.  He must really like it and I fully am on his side:-) I love going to beach and surfing too! I miss it alot.

Odaiba Beach, though it is a small man made beach and there is no surf,  it still gives us feeling of coming to beach and since it is the closest waterfront from where we live, we come here quite often during summer especially after Koki is born.

I know some people give up surfing because Tokyo has no surfable beach closeby and we need to travel at least an hour to get to any spot and these beaches do not offer quality surf unless typhoon is nearing.  I know some guys from California, Hawai'i, or Australia who just don't surf in Tokyo because they say it is not worth the trouble.
I cannot seem to give up on it and though I have not surfed reasonably in past couple years (before that I was going every weekend), I am still a surfer in my mind and keep thinking about it even if I don't touch water at all.

This must be in my DNA and some people get like that some people regardless of years they surf don't get that way (like Toru never gets like that).

Since Koki's starting to show more and more interest in surfing and passion for ocean, I am trying to scheme out our weekend surf plan.

1) Rent a car for half day (saves money whole alot)
2) Go towards sunset time (people go in the morning more)
3) Buy a boogie board (though it is not as much fun as surfing, easier to carry around, fits in  a smaller, cheaper cars too)

Dream is realizable if you don't give up on it,  stoke coming back to my life soon!!

Bon Odori fes

with Maya

We went to bon odori summer dance festival at my friend's dauther's pre school yesterday. Many people showed up dressed in yukata, jinbei, etc.  Such a Japanese summer scene.

Summer is full of fun in Japan in spite of hot humid weather. Many festivals and firework events everywhere.  This is the highlight season of the year in Japan.

My work started last week. As always first one week is nerve wrecking and tiring with new environment and 6 hours straight at PC.  Business owner is 2 years younger and direct boss is 7 years(!), and assumedly 90% of employees younger than me.  I am the only bilingual and because I never worked in 100% Japanese environment, use of respect language (called keigo in Japanese) and appropriate attitude towards staff is bit tricky for me (maybe only in my head).

However, only a 15min bus ride with jeans OK environment, cannot beat anything else.
First one month is always adjusting phase and we'll see how I adjust.

Enjoy rest of Sunday!!

this week

A hot week it has been.  In spite of unforgiving vicious sun light, I went out every afternoon this week.  I had some catch ups with some friends before I get into another busy phase of my life.
One other friend having a baby now, she is due next Jan where my other friend I saw last weekend is due this Nov.  I need to buy a baby gift for a friend who had a baby girl right after 311 and I still have not seen a baby boy who was born last fall.  So many babies in my life now!!  And it is a good thing, every time a baby is born it brings bliss to the world.

I bought a cook book (maybe for the first time since everything is possible on internet nowdays) which has easy recipes, only 4 steps and can be all done in one frying pan.  I plan to cook up 5 main dishes (for Mon -Fri) on Sunday night and put them in freezer.  That way I only need to prepare 1 or 2 side dishes as I get home around 6pm everyday from next week.

Oh how I appreciate past few months when I was able to clean, organize, cook without any sense of rush.  Especially cooking, I realize if I have time for it, it becomes joy but as soon as it becomes one of many chores I need to squeeze into given short period of time, it becomes a burden...

Seeking a good balance and tactics to make it happen...

Coffee, love of my life.

It is always a fight between wanting to have enough time to enjoy the start of the day and wanting to sleep more.  I try to wake up early enough to grind coffee beans to hand drip fresh coffee every morning.  This is something I am particular about, coffee.  If I happen to wake up late, then I just won't have coffee.   I'd rather not have it all than having non fresh or no good coffee.  Then at some point of a day, lunch or snack time, I will make time to have it.

I buy beans from coffee bean shops, not from a grocery store.  They sell them by grams and roast the beans according to their taste characteristics.  Other than coffee I am pretty easy going, especially after having Koki I know I need to watch my spending and save here and there as much as possible for rainy days.

Last Saturday Koki and I took trains to go see my friend who is 5 month pregnant. She seemed mellowed out and happy, good thing for an expecting mother.  I remembered about my pregnancy and early motherhood when it was a big burden to refrain from drinking coffee (or any caffeinated drinks).

I need a cup of good coffee everyday, without it my life is bit less vibrant.

Plants in our lives

A flower shop opened up in neighbor, so I went to pick up some flowers for our place.

Ever since I saw a bright pink flower bloom on a small table top cactus which was sitting on a dining table besides a window in an apartment in LA, I tried growing few different kinds of plant, 2 phenix trees, one dragon tree, a hibiscus tree which my friend gave us, but sadly enough all of them at some point lost its vitality and there was no more plant in our place for a while.

This time, geranium because the flower shop guy told me it is easy to grow.  And a coffee tree he gave to Koki.

Since we need to cut back on the electricity as much as we can, I want to bring in pea or something that grows tall if we set poles to grow on which makes green curtain to block the vicious summer sun rays in the morning.

Cousins and jiji

Job decided last week, freelance music translation project delivered this week (much appreciation to my friend in LA), and Koki over his ear infection and went back to his day care without crying, I am enjoying my time alone at home with bossa nova, chocolate cake and a cup of coffee, such a luxury.

I should go get my haircut and go see friends I haven't seen in a while while this free time lasts (another 1 week).

Last weekend, I saw all of my nieces and nephew.  They all grew in a while and Koki can play with them better.  It is amazing to see children's growth and it always makes me wonder how their brains develop, how they learn language and learn to relate words to things etc.  It must be interesting to study that.

Thanks to our generous friends in Hawai'i, ever since we came back from there, Koki has no allergic(?) reaction to English.  Before the trip, he used to get upset when I spoke English or sang English songs.  I guess he no longer regards it as something foreign since he made some friends in Hawai'i who speak them and he saw them live the language right before his eyes.

Children are so full of possibility and I hope to let that be, not put too much expectation or to suppress it.
No matter where I am, all I need to remember is to be centered and stay simple, simple is best, always.

- Hired!

iphone stereo

After some sleepless nights, many unreturned resumes and phone calls, I found a job!
I will start my new job from July 4th, this time 10 AM to 5 PM, same hours as before but this time 5 days a week. Cannot imagine how this one extra working day will affect my and my family's life, but we'll start and adjust my schedule and career if necessary as we go.

My job search started from end of Feb and it took me 4 months to find a job (incl. 1 month and half in Hawai'i tho).  Well, at least I found one, I cannot complain.

My priorities this time were location and environment.
Since 311, I have not been able to imagine working anywhere I cannot walk home from and with Koki environment needed to allow space for diversity.

I am glad I found something.  We'll see how it goes.

I hope to continue doing my music lyrics and credit translation projects which I get time to time.  I hope to build my career around it so that I can work from home before Koki gets in an elementary school.
I want to be around for his after school and his homework etc.

Yup, I am still going strong at age 37, not yet to give up !!

脱原発 - farewell to nuclear plants

Borrowed from Greenpeace.com

Friend of friend had a geiger counter which measures radiation and my friend had her room measured by it and it gave 0.05 by the window. This is about the same measure as before 311 disaster. She lives on 7th floor of 17 or so story building in middle of Tokyo.  This gave me a big relief.
The other concern is tap water.  Though the government gives safe measure, nobody really believes it.  I use it to rinse but not to drink, especially that water supply is back to normal now.

Some say don't take it too serious, just be cautious but not overly, but when your child's health on stake, I or any parent will be overly serious and we should be.  With children, it maybe alright now but in 20 or 30 year period, we don't have clue.

Italy joined Germany in abolishing nuclear plants in the country, why isn't Japan the first one?  It is ridiculous.  We anyhow have to snatch back the decision making process in our own hands from politicians.

I used to be one of many who says "Politics? Nah, somebody else will take care of it. I don't know enough to have a say." but I am determined to be involved in act against nuclear plants movement which is becoming bigger and bigger through grass roots level.

No more nuclear plants!!

Koki walked with me to his day care this morning singing "Toshan kaisha (daddy work), Lea nenne (sleeping), Mio gakko (school), Maya gakko (school)".  He was probably telling himself that everyone is doing something and so he will go to school.
When we got there, he picked up his shoes and put them in his spot, ran to his friends who were playing with LEGO blocks, and waved his hand to me when I said "ja ne (see you later)".
Though he looked a little anxious, he did not cry.  At last!! I am glad and relieved to see he is getting adjusted to his new environment.

Yesterday, he was crying when he left house with Toru and I almost gave up.  I was wondering to myself that it has been a week and he does not show a sign of adjustment.  Then in the afternoon, we went to his friend Lea's house and later his other friend Mio showed up.  They played, ate and took bath, brushed teeth together, Koki crashed into a bed as soon as we got home around 9pm.

I have a job interview at 3:30 pm today.  Not counting on it too much.  I hear as soon as they know you have a small child, they turn their back on you and say "thank you for coming, we will let you know", even for part time positions.

Well, it is no good making assumptions, so I will just go with blank mind.

Divine wine & cuisine

Out of an occasion, I went to see my friend who is helping out a small wine bar in Nakameguro which her friend runs.  Bar specializes in wine and food from New Zealand and Australia.  Very nice size, not too big not too small, with good selection of wine (though I don't know much I enjoyed what I had chardonnay and pignot noir with liver pate) and food.

Just few minutes away from Nakameguro station off Toyoko line, if you ever go in the area, stop by.
