Surfing

So I went, surfing, at Kugenuma Beach, Shonan.
My friend came to pick me up at 7:30ish and we got to the beach around 9:15am.
After a thorough warm up, we went in the water around 9:30am until I was in until noon-ish with a break in middle.

First half was all spent on catching up.  After taking a rest in middle, I could see a wave, judge a ridable wave, paddle at the right speed and catch and ride it to the shore, just like I used to, except I could not pick up the bottom turn which I was starting to pick up few years ago before I went in a long break from surfing due to pregnancy. This will be my thing next time I go.

Surf was knee to thigh high at set (yes, at set!) but still ridable.
I was on a 7 foot spongey fan board my friend rent me and so I waited a little out (toward the shore) from the line up and caught all the small ones which all other surfers did not go for, sometimes regular ones if I were lucky with only few on a line up. Yet, towards I started to wanting more, bigger and fun waves to ride toward the end.

I asked my friend to take me to a Chiba beach next time, Chiba is directly facing Pacific Ocean so waves are usually rougher (but still way weaker than Hawai'i or California) and bigger, tide stronger.

My whole body sore, but it feels good. Stoke is in me now.

California vibe

Taro Okamoto
I went to Omotesando, the most "high end" part of Tokyo.
Though it is within an half an hour train ride range from our place, I rarely come here. Things are too expensive and too crowded on the weekend.

Yet, it is nice to step in this Omotesando-Aoyama area once in a while to feel "okay" in a culture/ fashion sense.

Though, Toru and I prefer more of "Ura-Harajuku" area, back streets of Omotesando. Many small shops, restaurants and cafes are located on small tangling streets and fun to explore (especially alone).

My relative Hiroko came along and we found this industrial looking cafe under a pancake restaurant recommended by a shop staff I boutht a pari of artsy yellow pants for 3000 yen (about 38USD). Initially we were planning to got to the pancake place but as soon as we heard loud chirps of young crowd, we silently turned around and stepped down the outside staircase.
1st floor cafe was empty and looked so serene, plus both of us love coffee so we went in.

One guy who was sitting by the entrance with a laptop in front opened the door for us and he seemed to be an owner of the cafe.  It was cafe and gallery and just opened a day ago, he explained. He seemed to have this vibe that is not typical to Japanese mid age man and from the conversation, I sensed he either used to or currently lives in California. All the artworks displayed in the cafe was by California artists.

Another California moment was when I met with Craig who is from California running a small design firm in Tokyo for lasts16 years or so. We met through craiglist Tokyo (met Craig through craiglist, haha) and he offered me series of freelance translation projects to help him launch and introduce his idea of California designs to Japan. I met with him last week in his office in Yoyogi and the conversation just took off and it was easily 2 hours when we said "talk to you soon!".

Ever since I came back to Japan in year 2005, I never really looked back on the days in California, but this recent interactions with California vibes made me want to re-visit the place.

Thinking of you, So-Cal.

Typhoon #4

Typhoon #4 has come and gone up north, blowing and washing everything out of our city of Tokyo.
Since the start of the rain season, I have been a bit under the cloud, digging deeper into myself (sounds so cliche, yuck!).

Looking back, a similar pattern was seen 2 springs ago, when I was contemplating if I should come back to work or stay home, plus no vacancy at nursery schools in our district. I was sandwiched by so many factors in life. Then the first spring wind blew.

A friend in my college years once told me I was too interested in other people's thoughts and psychological patterns that I should focus more on myself to know better of myself or something.
No one will every really know what he or she is, I think. We just live, thats it.
They way I see myself when I hit a wall is to look at how I communicate/ relate with others to see the pattern of myself.  Others are perfect mirror of myself.

Well, thats that.
Today's perfectly sunny with high humidity and a hint of rising temperature towards afternoon.
A typical summer day in Tokyo.

I plan to go surfing next week!

Life goes on

メタボ a diet review

和食  Japanese dinner plate

Tokyo is now officially in a rain season.
From here until end of July at the longest... a gloomy season in a year.
My boss is off to LA to work all June, until half the rain season. Lucky him.
I wish I could bail but with a little guy and life to run, no chance.

Out of the blue, a sunny day comes, today.
Nice, dry sunny day, just like in California. I went to a grocery store to shop with flip flops and
a straw hat.

A health checkup's result came last week.
My cholesterol and neutral fat level were high, almost double the last year's.
It made me re-evaluate my diet.

I love butter, which is one of the major driving factors for a high cholesterol/ calorie diet.
Each morning, I have a toast and fruit with a cup of coffee, a toast with lots of butter.
On weekends, I go out with Koki for a breakfast at a nearby cafe which serves good croissant,
with a cup of latte.

My mom was the same until she hit 60s.
Her doctor told her to look over and change her diet to lower her cholesterol.
Now she eats healthy, mostly traditional Japanese dishes.

I started doing the same from this week:
(Less butter on my toast in the morning and a major recipe change for dinner, below)

Yesterday: Foil baked salmon (with a hint of olive oil, salt & pepper), soy bean and corn salad, steamed cabbage salad with non cholesterol dressing

Today: Steamed chicken with green onion sauce (sauteed in sesame oil), soy bean salad, steamed then sauteed zucchini and cabbage, dried daikon radish cooked in soy sauce, mirin and water

I look forward to finding more good and healthy recipes.
