卒*保育園, last day at day care

Friday was Koki's last day at his day care.
On Wednesday, they threw a small farewell party.
Many teachers and moms were crying after seeing a movie
showing the growth of their children.
Kids seemed careless, just living another regular day,
kind of funny I thought.
2, 3 year olds (or younger) are still not fully really aware about
the memories and things adults are fond of, I guess.
Koki seems more excited about whats coming next, kindergarten.

I can't believe it's been almost 3 years since he started his day care
and he never got into any of public day care...
It is upsetting that Tokyo City has not done much to alleviate
the waiting line for day care opening.
When I first applied for entry in spring of 2010, the situation was
same, maybe now even worse. Since then we have listed our name
on the list for public day cares, but no availability til now!!

Can you believe this?! No, I cannot.
In Yokohama City, next to Tokyo, took immediate action about this
and now their waiting list is down to zero, amazing.

Anyway,
looking back on last few years, so many things happened and
it is amazing how Koki grew from a baby to now a child.
He talks almost like an adult now and he is very active.

Next week is his spring break.
I need to think of plans for Koki:

Monday, a soccer trial at 3pm.
Tuesday, no plan yet, maybe to Costco to buy a child car seat.
Wednesday, going to Shinjuku to see my friend and a baby.
Thursday or Friday, play with Maya.

Living in central Tokyo requires much planning for kids....

Have a nice weekend.

Hanami

Cherry blossom at full bloom now.
So beautiful. Makes everyone so happy every year
around this season.

I went to pick up Koki a little early on Thursday so
we could ride up and down the hill on our bike to
appreciate the cherry blossom ceiling in our
neighborhood.

I waited till the weekend to wine and dine under
cherry blossom trees (called ohanami, something
Japanese people have been doing every spring
everywhere in Japan since some hundred years
ago in spring) along side Meguro river
and it got cold toward the weekend.

We went out with light meals packed in a lunch box
but we managed to stay 30 minutes or so and got
freezing.

I am to send out my resume to 3 days a week,
9-1 pm part time job I found at Hello Work (a public
job database).
Juggling 3 jobs is probably too much to handle
when all of them get busy simultaneously, but
to enable things and to make our life a bit more
colorful to enjoy, a bit more income can help.

Do what we can when we can.

Have a nice weekend!

Roppongi

Keyaki Zaka Crossing, looking towards Midtown

Roppongi is a multi culture centre of Tokyo.
This is where many non Japanese like to come
for lunch, dinner, night clubs, etc.
This is because many foreign capital investment
banking firms (like Goldman Sachs, Barclays etc.)
have their Japan set up here and the city's full of
bilingual services.

My boss, no exception, being an American business
owner in Tokyo, likes this town as well and
we come here alot to meet client, partners etc.

It is funny how if two Japanese personnels were to
meet for a business meeting, we probably never
come to think of Roppongi as a place to meet,
unless either works in Roppongi.

Roppongi offers business side and an entertainment
side.

Entertainment side offers many restaurants, bars, and
clubs.

When I was a high school kid, I used to sneak out
at night with my friend to come to Roppongi for
music and dancing, clubs.
We had to hit the last train to go back around 11:30PM
or so, yet enough excitement for a high school kid.
Back then, Japan still had one foot in remains of 80s
economic high rise, so many clubs still had disco-feel
to them

Few years later, I moved on to Nishiazabu, Aoyama
area, more sophisticated and clean part of Tokyo,
town of fashion and mature, for cafe/bar/gallery/club
type of places.

As I was walking down this hill in Roppongi heading
towards Azabu Juban station to get on a train to
come back,

for a snap of second I was in my high school time,
wondering did I ever imagine at age 38 walking down
this hill after a business meeting in a rather business
attire holding a business bag,
looking all like people I saw riding along with me on a
commute train every morning going to a school?

But then, I realized I was so naive and arrogant thinking
I'd be graduating from United Nations University (in
Aoyama) and working as a diplomat back
then....(laughable)

Funny how life turns you out,
but in a better way I guess.

I managed to file my 2012 tax online this week
and file my sole proprietorship starting this
year (both due tomorrow, March 15th).

Better to work and file tax as a sole proprietor
(a business entity but not a company) than
just claiming my income as a random income
in terms of tax deduction.

With over 100,000 JPY medical spending,
we have few hundred dollars worth tax return
this year, bonus!

Koki loves music and he has a certain taste in
music that he loves. He shakes to Sergio Mendez
featuring Black Eyed Peas version of "Mas Que Nada",
Daft Punk "One More Time", Carry Pamyu Pamyu
(a Japanese pop artist) and also many other songs.

My Friend led me know of a hip hop dance class in
a neighbor and took Koki there yesterday for a trial.
Turns out that the class was all about teaching steps
and how to do, bit boring for a 3 year old.

He wants to move on to a soccer class trial now.

Maybe this summer we'll take him to Asakusa Samba
Carnival (yes, there is a samba carnival in Tokyo! very
popular too) and a music fes instead.

Thanks to my friend Ken in LA,
I got done with enormous translation of
Rod Stewart liner notes.

It was tough, lots of metaphors and
sentences which makes no sense.

I realize I am not yet bilingual....

Yet, I again enjoyed the project.
Words are fun.

My sister and my niece came over on Sunday.
We had lunch together.
Such a quality time.

I wish my 2 sisters (and their families) and
we lived closer... just like my mom.
My mom and her 2 sisters and a brother live
in my hometown (1 aunt lives in Tokyo).
That must be nice.

Through this recent tangling emotional experience,
I realize narrowing myself with cutting down
things by a quick assessment or from a
small tangling is very tricky,

yes, it will limit my life therefore in a way makes
my life easier, but at the same time,
I run a chance of missing out on the essential
and the good.

I am not perfect, no one is,
thats why we are all living in this world,
so why not let go,
if it is not something that will end my world.

Don't hold grudges against trivial bumps,
let them come right through to an exit,

stay free, live simple.

I was happily strolling down the shopping arcade
on a sunny warm morning and two ladies
run up to me with 2 oranges and an avocado in
their hands.

I realize my shopping bag was open, hanging down
from the rear child seat.

I thank them and say goodbye and a man comes
up to me and hand me an orange, "this, too, mom.".

Then an old man walking besides me looks at me
and smiles,
"How about the front basket? Can't they fit?"

I am struck, with this mild warmth coming from
human beings..... I realize people are like that,
they have always been, regardless of the fact
that Tokyo is a very intense city where people
no longer appreciate each other, push and
curse at each other in a commute train, on
streets etc.

Winter, I realize I tend to get depressed, every
year, obliviously, and this is when I tend to run
into problems.

Well, now the spring is nearing, almost officialy
spring, a week or two more of sparse cold days
and we should be off to a good season, the best
season in Tokyo.

It's about time (again) I soaked myself in the ocean.
I need that now more than ever.

Have a nice weekend.

New Bicycle

Tokyo is experiencing a very warm day today.
A weekly weather forecast tells me it will be
warmer than usual for next several days.

It was freezing until few days ago and suddenly
we are surrounded with spring in the air, in the
sky, in..everywhere.

Time to say goodbye to an especially cold
winter this year and hello to a warm, cherry
blossom blooming spring!

We have a  brandnew electric bicycle for Koki's
kindergarten drop-off/pick-up from April.
The school has a crazy bus schedule (Koki ends
up leaving/coming home too early with riding
on the bus for more than 40 minutes..),
so we decided to use the bicycle on sunny days
and car sharing system on rainy days.

This car sharing system is quite clever.
Cheaper than rental car if you need it less than
10 hours a day. 1000 JPY monthly charge which
can be carried over to usage fee which is 200 JPY
per every 10 minutes.
This is perfect for life in central Tokyo where a
parking space costs minimum 25000 JPY montly!

I will be making a bento (lunch box) for Koki everyday
from May (April he comes home at noon).

I will expect a drastic life change as a kindergarten
school is not a day care, but we'll be adjusted just
like we have been to every kind of change in our
life so far.

Kimono

Grandma's keepsake, kimono accessories

Yesterday was 49th day from the day Toru's grandma passed away.
In Buddhism, this is the day the deceased finishes his/her journey
to become a buddha (in some sects, it is believed that the deceased
becomes a buddha soon after he or she passes away).
A period between yin and yen, life and death.

During this 49 days, grandma went through 7 trials to receive a
judgement of her dos in her life which determines which world
she will be born into in her next life (called "rin ne", reincarnation).

This period is also spent to purify the spirit.

If the deceased surpassed the expectancy of the judge with his or her
life being full of good deeds, then she or he will not reincarnate.
She or he has no need to go back to human world to build good deeds,
he or she will simply go to heaven.

From Buddhism point of view, this is why there are people who are
full of benevolence and do lots of good things without any benefit
beyond people's imagination,
where there are others who do horrible things which any insane person
cannot believe.

Different people, different spirit levels.

Good thing is if you manage to realize that in this life,
you can focus on upraising your spirit level doing good things in this life
so your next life will be an easier one (hopefully).

In any case, after 49 days, our grandma is probably taking a rest!
Wow, please put your feet out and rest well grandma.

Gassho.
