補給補給, for my skin

Sadly, there was no Mother's Day in our house,,,
I asked Koki to please remember it next year.
It would be nice to know they don't take me for
granted but they appreciate me.
I shouldn't expect too much in life, maybe,
I have a beautiful family and I should be happy
and content with just that, but my heart told me
I want to be appreciated time to time to know
I mean something to them.
I don't need birthdays or wedding anniversaries,
but just Mother's Day, I want to be appreciated.
That is when all the hard work I put in being a
mom pays off.
Am I asking too much?

Hiroto started eating rice porridge and mashed
veges with soup this month. In Japan they recommend
to start at 5th month but it didin't occur to me
to seriously start until last week.
He also started rolling over. He can also play by
himself a little longer.

Koki is enjoying his school time. He stayed after
school to play with his friends in a playground
twice last week.

Life seems to be rolling smoothly, with a perfect
sunny and dry California like weather in May.

I thought about Hiroto's day care and my career
during GW. I thought it is maybe about time I
went back to a full time work, just makes things
a lot more simple. Juggling different jobs takes
more energy to manage and it would be easier
for me to focus.
Changing jobs often is starting to take away  my
energy and time (maybe I am getting old) and
I feel it is about time I found a career I can
continue for rest of my career
(next 20 years or so, possibly more).

I called Ward office and there was still an opening
at a public after school program if Koki had to
start.

With all that, by end of GW I was leaning towards
finding a full time opportunity.
I told the international school that I would like to
wrap up my work in a month to pursue a different
opportunity (I have no regret in this for
they no longer really provide me with any benefit
working for them).

Through internet search, I found some potential
opportunities already at beginning of last week.
On Friday, I went to a nearby Hello Work to get a
recommendation letter (required for any company
listed on Hello Work job database) for a full time
position in Omotesando.
I felt I was all set to start a serious job search this
time, planning to spend sometime to find a good fit
rather than jumping on the first opportunity that
comes.

Then, on my way back, I stopped by at a pediatritian
to get Hiroto's  cough and runny nose
(it came back again)  checked, only to find his ears
infected. The doctor sighed and said to me,

The day care, from age 0, hmmm, do you really
need to return to your job? Or did you put him in to
save a spot?
Can't you work from home? A babysitter?
It is ideally better to wait at least until he turn age of 1.

Then I sighed, I know... but with this daycare situation,
I really didn't have any choice.

I came back home with Hiroto, sat down at our table,
looking down on a recommendation letter, sighed and
tossed it in a garbage can.

I knew this somewhere in my mind that I am just not
ready, but anyhow I pushed myself to be ready.

Back to step 1.

Will be a long journey but Hiroto will be this cute and
so baby only next several months.
I should cherish when I can.

寝返り、rolling over

初節句, boys day celebration

Koki turned 7 on May 1st.
He easily leaped over a big step of entering into an elementary
school and starting a new life and surprised us.
He is not a little boy any more. He is starting to show a different
side of him which give us a hint of how he will be when he grows
up. He is learning so much everyday, with new everything, he
is glowing.  Being young and child is all about that.

Hiroto made a debut at the beach yesterday, on a boy's day.

We celebrated Koki's birthday at Toru's parents house and Hiroto's
boys day celebration at my parents house on our way back from
the beack.

Hiroto seemed a bit scared from the sound of ocean and wind and
cried at his feet touching a cold sea water. Everything is so new to
him, the sun, the ocean, the whole nature.

I wonder what it is like to not know what the ocean is and come to
see, feel it for the first time. When you think about it, it is pretty rad.

2 boys are growing day by day and I turn to myself and ask,
how am I doing? I turned 42 a few weeks ago, am I any new?
I often say to myself, there goes me again, doing that again, this
pattern I have built all around me like those sea shells that cling to
a piece of wood lying on the beach.
I think it protects me but it actually drives good away too.
I want to spend time to peel the shells off me one by one, slowly,
step by step, hoping when they are gone I'll be refurbished but
if not, at least a revised me.

Blown by an onshore wind, shone by the ocean, looking at a
nearby green hill which is hazed by the temperature difference
between hot sun and cold ocean,
thoughts after thoughts came in and out of my head making
me a bit dizzy. I took a deep breath.

I want to leap too. Leap to a new, next ground where stillness
prevails (I make my life too busy and noisy) and I don't
have to keep looking or feel like I need to make up or fill in.

Have a nice weekend.

禁句?taboo but true?

We just came back from an otorhinolaryngologistan (ear, nose, throat doctor).
Hiroto has been suffering from runny nose ever since he started daycare.
It goes away over the weekend, comes back again after his daycare resumes on Monday.
I try to take him to get his nose sucked as much as I can, but his nose get clogged up right after he gets his nose sucked. Really bad.
Yesterday, his right eye got infected from it and took him to an eye doctor. He got an eye drop to kill the bad germ. This morning, he got a syrup to easen his runny nose. But the most important thing is to get rid of the runny nose as much as we can, so I ordered an electric nose aspirator on Amazon.

Hopefully he will be better over the Golden Week which starts tomorrow.

I was told by the owner of the international school that she prefers not to support my daycare application for Hiroto now that I am not a full time. This really irritated me since she is the one who cut down on my schedule, not me.
I almost told her all the reasons she should be ashamed she said this but I know how she is, so instead of making myself more irritated by going against her, I withdrew from this whole nonsense and then emotionally moved on. I will not quit right away but eventually if my schedule fills up with other work, they will be the first to cut (hopefully sometime this year).

Luckily Jack, who I work for on freelance basis, will help me get the right paper work for the application. I am crossing my fingers that this will not change the mind of the ward office people who make decision about daycare entry.

But, worst case scenario, if they kick Hiroto out of his daycare, so be it. There is nothing I can do. I will just quit the international school and work from home for Jack plus few others I currently help including the translation projects and a new investment company guy who asked me to come back sometime after GW.

I know it is a taboo and not politically correct for me to say this, but I just don't trust women business owners any more. I had no good experience working for them regardless of their age group or nationality.
Once I am done with the current Canadian business owner at international school, I will be done with it all for rest of my life. I just had enough about women business owners not being able to see the big picture, their tendency of micro managing things and most of all, changing rules and decisions around their emotions.
I know you will tell me, "oh it depends, it depends on a woman, not a gender thing, it's a personality thing", but no, I am not going to give that consideration or chance any more. Believe me, I tried that in the past so many times being a woman myself. Call me a racist. I have had enough of it.

On a separate occasion, a translation project flew in (from a woman sales rep working for a small publishing company; she seems to manage herself around her emotions well but she is not an OWNER. She works for a  company).

Anyway, we are so looking forward to GW. Almost a week away from everything, except for next Monday and Friday which are regular day. We are planning to BBQ with Toru's high school friends on the 4th and maybe go to the beach if there is a hot sunny day. Otherwise, we plan to stay around Tokyo, kick back and relax.

Enjoy your weekend! (and GW if you are in Japan)

半フルモード、in a semi-full mode

I'm at a new cafe in my neighbourhood enjoying a latte after a long half day at the international school and running an errand for them in Shirokane.
Whew, this is golden, time to let hair down for a while, releasing myself from all the must dos.

Hiroto barely went to the daycare last week due to fever and coughs, runny nose. He had no time to get adjusted, refusing formula milk every time he went.  Hopefully he will adjust soon.

My job schedule settled with 2 days a week at international school, 1 day at an inestment company (private equity) and anothet day wfh, altogether 4 days a week.

This schedule sits in better for me than  3 consecutive days at office 9-5 plus wfh.

I dont intend to go full time mode until Hiroto enters into elementary school, in 6 years. Until then, if I have to keep jaggling between jobs, I will.

Whatever makes me and my family happy:-)

I should go now, get bk to reality, stop by at a fish shop to pickup dinner receipe and at a bakery for tomorrow breakfast, then pickup Hiroto, then Koki from English class

仕事とかいろいろ, daycare, job and me

I ended up turning down a job offer which came to me a few
weeks ago after an interview with a French woman who ran
an ecommerce business here in Tokyo.
Everything except for location did not match my criteria but
since the woman seemed very nice plus I was feeling a bit
in haste to find a job, I took on the offer, but since then I
felt uneasiness about it anyhow and something did not quite
fit myself.

Hiroto started going to a daycare from this week.
Yesterday and today he only stayed for 2 hours, but I already
felt guilty about leaving him in someone else's hands.
I am simply not ready to put him in someone else's hands for
a long time every day. This is another reason I turned down the
job offer.

The daycare Hiroto goes is run by the ward office and is a
great and safe environment so I do not intend to let go of
the space we have for Hiroto. I just need more adjusting
period, at least 1 month before he goes and stay there more
than 5 hours a day. Till then I'd like to go pick him up before
his nap time.

Funny thing is just when I started feeling uneasiness, things
started turning around and someone else called me in for an
interview. This company was my first pick out of 3 other
job posts I found this time because they offered better pay
plus flexible work hours and days. The company has been
around since 1996 and the business seems stable and lucrative.
I have an interview with the president of the firm at 1pm this
Saturday.

Plus I just found out that the Japanese guy who work for an
American business owner I have been helping out for last
6 years is reducing his hours from this month, so I may need
to come in to support more (can be done from home).

I also have the international school once a week plus several
hours per week from home.

With all that, I decided to wait until at least mid May to start
another job.

I feel relieved.

Tomorrow we are going to Koki's school ceremony.
He is going to be the 1st grader at elementary school.
Congrats to Koki.

Good night.

卒園、graduation

園友、with his kinder buddies

Friday was Koki's graduation.
He said goodbye to teachers and friends he spent time
with past 3 years at a kindergarten school.
It was sad for him to say goodbye to his good friends
but at the same time, it is exciting to look forward to
his new life soon to start at elementary school.

I chose my wardrobe in a spring color for Koki's
graduation ceremony only to find
other parents dressed in black.
I turned to Toru and asked why and he said in Japan
it is customary to wear black at formal events
(surprisingly, people wear black for not only funerals
but also for wedding!).

For some reason, I am lost in this Japanese tradition,
customs stuff and I often find myself looking little
odd (or out of place) but I got used to being
different and don't really care any more if I don't
fit in. I will just be me, someone who spent
too long living out of Japan (or something).

I am on my job search journey again.
The international school I work for is moving to a
new, smaller location due to current building
demolition and although we had another location
in place to accommodate new families from May,
suddenly the building owner turned down our
application and so the business has no space
to grow. This made my work shift down to only
once or twice at most a week.

All these hard work to get a spot in a nursery
school and after school program...

I have an interview scheduled on this Wednesday.
I plan to line up 2 or 3 more interviews by mid April
and hopefully land another job starting from May.

I am pretty good at writing up a resume (yes, after
all these interviews I know the pitch) and leading
an effective interview so I am pretty confident
I will soon find another job,
but turning 42 next month, I am starting to feel
it is about time I found a long term employemnt
(which I intend to do every time I am on a job
search journey).

Oh spring is indeed a season of new start and change...

Winter is back...

Warm days made me happy and
my feet lighter to go out
then suddenly cold rain this
morning making me sad.
aftet dropping off Koki at his bus
pickup, I went for our regular walk
to a nearby park with Hiroto.
Kawazu Zakura petals on the ground,
spring is nearing for sure, after
each rain, a hope.

It turns out that Kokis after school
program comes with a mandatory
parents volunteering to operate the
services on weekends.... no, no,
I said to myself
and left the gathering immediately.
Both Toru and I want to spend
our days off with our kids,
not with other parents.
I purely wonder, why they dont
change this system.
I (and I believe many other working
parents) would prefer paying extra
cash to the program so that
they hire necessary resources to
operate the program rather than
spending my (their) own precious spare
time on it.

I swiftly made a decision to put
Koki in a private, bilingual after school
program closer from our house.
This schedule requires me to decrease
my work hours at office in April
until Koki's school schedule goes full
time mode, plus of course the fee is
much higher than the
public after school program,
but both Toru and I felt it is worth spending
if we can save our weekend time to be
spent with our children.

Tomorrow and Monday, I must
go to Hiroto's nursery school
for his health checkup and
to go through the facility and
meet the care taker.

March is so busy with all those
events for starting a new life
plus Koki's graduation next wk.

Im already tired from running
around between my wfh work
plus looking after 2 boys plus
house chores...
I constantly have a headache
and now a huge canker sore...

Have a nice weekend.
