Shibuya

The picture is Shibuya.
When I saw the scene, it was very futuristic (this word sounds so obsolete) with people,
cars, neon and a train coming into the air, but as I cut out the scene in my iPhone camera,
it lost that feeling and touch.

Picture taking is always deceiving, very tricky.
But when it is done right (most of the time accidentally), it makes you happy.

My sort of like life plan has been sitting on a swing, with constant wind blow,
rain fall, sometimes snow fall, constantly changing over past few years.

Living 30s and 40s is I guess a chaos.

Of course, life is in your hands and you plan it for rainy days, but I am starting to realize
things happen for a reason and there is casuality between things that happen.

When I was younger, I used to think I make things happen because I desire them,
but as I experience more, I am starting to think I only find opportunity to start
something but the rest will flow into a bigger stream, where no human being can
control.

And if you try to go against that stream of yours, your life will be a tough one.
But if you are humble and see and realize that there is a bigger stream over your
reach and let that stream flow as it should, then your life will flow how it should.

Really, life is full of wonder and that is why it is so amazing.

Wow, very philosophic this morning.

Good day.

節分, beginning of spring

February 3rd is Setsubun when devils come and people throw
soy beans to drive them away yelling out "devils out, fortune in".
This is also the day spring begins on Japanese old calendar.

Koki was all looking foward to this bean throwing ceremony at
his day care taking place on Friday, but as he woke up,
he started saying he is afraid of the devils and don't want to
stay till the ceremony.

It was funny how he told his teachers,
"I need to be home to throw beans at devils coming to my home.
I need to be there to protect my mommy.".

Hmm, I am no where near the type of woman who needs to be
protected, but thanks son, it is brave of you.

I have a habit of taking an immediate action when it comes to
jobs.  As I have been spending more time reading, cleaning,
cooking etc. at home past several weeks,
I am starting to be impatient and worried.

Japanese government provides an employment service called
Hello Work (a strange name, this is so Japlish) which provides
an internet job search and a face to face job search service.

Many people take this public service very lightly, but it is
actually a very useful service.
Especially for part time workers, it is probably the most useful
job database.

Working and earning is not only a crucial factor in my life but
it also has become an important component of life which I
cannot imagine without.
I'd probably go crazy if I ever become 100% jobless.

To be myself and maintain peace of mind/ life balance
(insanity, other words), I need to be productive constantly.

Have a nice weekend and Setsubun.

This week started with a big snow fall here in Tokyo.
Adults bewildered, kids thrilled.

Toru's grandma passed away early morning of Sunday at
age of 96.

Her 2 daughters (aunt and mother in law) and their husbands,
5 grandchildren and 4 spouses, 4 great grandchildren all
gathered around grandma on Friday.
She was breathing heavily as if she could not breathe in well,
but as all of us gathered and shared the memory of our grandma,
she became more and more at ease.

Along with my grandma who passed away couple years ago,
she lived well passing age of 90.
Through toughest time and good time, they have seen many
and have been through many.

It is treasure in our mind what they told us of their times.

Rest well grandma.

Gassho.

My regular jazz & coffee shop had nobody, as expected,
this morning when I stepped in.
I love it this way.
Serene with loud jazz, perfect for reading books,
doing translation projects, writing etc.

As a sociable couple came in, I left.
Not that I dislike them, it was time for me to go, naturally.

I stepped out to a small shopping street (has appeared in this
blog many times).

A half of a huge Hakusai cabbage for 230 yen (3USD),
a small broccoli for 180 yen (2USD, rather expensive).
760g of pork spare rib meat for 750 JPY (8USD).
A pack of cut up monk fish 980 JPY (11USD).

A man at a fish store I always shop at yelled at me,

"You are rather early today, no? Where's your boy?"

which made me realize I am starting to become a member
of this town.

Born and brought up in a small beach town in Kanagawa
prefecture, south of Tokyo,
Tokyo has always been Tokyo for me, different from where
I grew up, a city of temporariness, not permanence.

But, as I build my network and life here in Tokyo,
it is changing slowly. Starting to understand the liveliness
and real life of Tokyo as there is a distinct culture,
though I must admit time to time I still find myself longing
to move back to where I am used to, closer to beach,
between the green valley.

WINTER SALE

Nice flyer design

A winter sale season usually starts on a new year's day (Jan 1st)
and ends around 2nd week of Jan here in Japan.

On a first day, people line up for hours to buy a Fukubukuro,
a lucky bag, which usually contains randomly selected clothes
with a big discounted price by apparel brand.
Then follows a regular winter sale.

The older, the colder you feel (except for menopause period).
I have been wanting to buy a warm down jacket for past few
years and finally yesterday I bought a nice down jacket with
a fur-like rimmed hood with30% off sales price, and also
a nice warm sheep wool x angora wool sweater, both from
this favorite brand of mine from France.

I first saw their shop in Paris few years ago and absolutely

loved their style, then it came to Tokyo the following year.
Since then I check in sometimes, but usually they are
too expensive, so I almost only shop during they are on
sale.

Indeed, Tokyo has almost everything you wish for....

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

We were virus free this end of a year and beginning of a year
and were able to attend both family's new year gathering.

2012 was rather a rough year for us with
so many hurdles to clear, but because it was rough,
I learned so much out of it.
Harder the life is, more you learn through the experience.

You become more and more understanding and gentle
to others from your own experience of pain.

My career wise it was always progressing and I am thankful
for that and also for the fact that we are all healthy and
living the way we were a year ago.

Wishing you a prosperous and healthy 2013!
