新学期、back to school
Back to school, kids are busy busy everyday.
Two weekends ago, we went to the beach in a pursuit of
fading summer. We have autumn rain almost
everyday now. We miss summer.
Koki learned to swim this year first at school PE class.
Then at the beach, he body surfed with me, such a delight.
I used to think it will be challenging for him to swim or body
surf in the ocean even more, but kids grow!
We parents should not under estimate or make assumption
about kids. They grow.
My work schedule slowing down again (never picked up I should
say).
I started around mid June in Roppongi, twice or less a week, and
the other company I help from home (Jack) missing in action
for last few months.
Since Hiroto goes to daycare, and Koki to after school program,
it is pointless for me to work in such slow schedule, so I picked
up my job search wand again.
I figured I want to work for a bigger company this time, so I
decided go through a recruitment agency. I signed up with the
biggest name in the market.
I met with a consultant and soon they introduced me to some
opportunities including Accenture and Oracle, but I picked out
a different US company subsidiary which is located within 30
minutes commute area from my home.
They pay less than Accenture or Oracle but instead they have
more flexible work schedule with almost no over time.
My consultant sounded reluctant about passing my resume to
the company (I guess they get paid more if they place me in
Accenture or Oracle because their hourly wage was bit higher),
but I went in for an interview yesterday and I got hired!
I was hoping to find a position that lets me start out as a temp
but later can grow into a full time (permanent) employee, but
as a start, I guess this is good enough.
I will start from October 1 (3rd to be exact), 10am to 4pm with
1 hour recess for lunch, Monday through Friday.
I am hoping I will get adjusted to their corporate environment
and work schedule soon.

大阪と台風、bk to Tokyo, typhoon season

Typhoon after typhoon as we came back from Osaka trip. Osaka was sunny and very very hot.
Food was fantastic (okonomi yaki and tako yaki, two types of non sweet pancakes from western Japan, popular snack food in Japan).
We walked around a lot, till pretty late everyday in Osaka.
Osaka is located in west of Japan and they speak with Kansai (western) accent. What I or my families speak is called hyojungo, a standard Japanese, and then Kansai ben is what they speak in west. To me, Kansai accent is a bit like California accent if hyojungo spoken in Tokyo was considered New York accent. Osaka has its own distinctive culture. Also, people seemed more friendly and open
than Tokyo.
Toru took Koki to Universal Studio Japan on 2nd day of our stay.
Hiroto and I went to see an old friend of mine from university
who moved to Kobe (next to Osaka) seven years ago due to her
husband's career. She now has a 4 year old daughter and 7 year
old (same age as Koki) son and has a house near a bridge called
Akashi Bridge which connects theJapan mainland, honshu, to
Awaji Island which is famous for growing olives and moderate
temperature.
Hiroto and I said good bye to my friend around 2:30pm and
joined Koki and Toru at USJ around 3:30pm. It was so sunny and
so hot that there was 30m line in front of a vending machine.
It was a good idea that I bought 4 bottles of water to bring in.
Last time we took a trip out of Japan was in 2011. Since then
Toru and I speak about going overseas again, LA or Hawaii, or
possibly South France where our friends are, but anyhow
we have not been able to make it out of Japan.
Now with Hiroto being a baby, it makes things a bit more difficult.
It is certainly doable, but it is just easier to travel inside Japan
as Japan is one of the safest countries in the world where you
don't have to worry about robbery or safety.
Plus, traveling by a car or a train is just so much easier with
small children (an of course easier on a wallet as well).
Toru mentioned maybe Guam next year? but hmmm I dunno.
There are so many places in japan to see, so I am leaning
towards another domestic trip.
We'll see.
Koki's back to school tomorrow.
Hiroto already went back to his day care after long 14 days
holiday (yes, that is considered LONG in Japan. Many people
only take 4,5 days, crazy, no?).
Koki made a debut to a sleep over to his friend this Monday.
He took his favorite blue elephant with him so he could sleep.
Result? He had so much fun, wants to do it again!
He wants to bring his friends over next time.
Maybe when Toru is around, on a 3 day weekend or something.
Although he struggled to get his summer load of homework,
he is still having so much fun being a 7 year old boy in summer.
Children are talented at making an ordinary into fun.

Obon break coming up!
![]() |
| Morning break at Starbukcs |
We are in 2nd week of August already, half way through
Koki's summer break. Koki still had two big chunk of
homework left to be done.
He complains with so much homework it is not really a
break, just a non school period.
I dont understand why the school make the first graders
study so much. They should play, that is part of their duty.
Our family break startz this week with me starting
tomorrow with Koki, then Hiroto and Toru from Thursday.
Koki made a swimming debut this year and though he
showed fear for going under water at the beginning,
he gradually got used to it and now he can dive, kick etc.
He had 4 day intensive swimming lesson starting tomorrow.
I saw fewer crowd on train and at a Starbucks this morning
so some people probably started their break already.
Summer is really hot in Tokyo sometimes hitting 95F in
this concrete surrounding. And with so much humidity,
the heat really takes away your energy.
But once inside so chilly with aircon in full blowing mode,
it can drive your body crazy.
I try to wear long sleeves even in summer to avoid getting
sick from this temperture difference.
Nexy week, we are planning to either drive or take a bullet
train(shinkansen) to Osaka to take Koki to Universal Studio
Japan where he is looking forward to Dragon Ball attraction.
Osaka is in west pary of Japan and is supposed to be
hotter than Tokyo.
And yes, we have Universal Studio in Japan.
We also have Disneyland in Chiba (next to Tokyo) .
Recently USJ attracts more visitors than Disneyland.
The question is, is there vacancy at hotel and shinkansen,,,

We have a new washing machine in our house!
It has a dryer as well and it is sooooo useful!
With 2 kids (2 boys), we have more laundries and although
most houses have space for hanging laundries in Japan
(usually balconies or a garden; I heard in U.S., only poor people hang launderies
outside. In Japan, everybody does, even the riches, they may hire someone to do their laundry but they still hang them outside)
and so do we, but I am starting to see the dryer is very very useful.
One push on a button and this new machine does from washing
to drying. It even heats up tap water and wash if we choose
that menu (there is also a sensor which automatically
detects dirt and if clothes are extremely dirty and it switches to
heavy load menu).
I got picked by the ward office pilates class on
and I started going first thing in the morning after dropping off Hiroto, from last Tuesday.
It is great for my spine and back.
Slowly I need to start getting back in shape to pump up
my energy level and to also slowly build my muscle
especially around my waist so that I am not hit by that
accute back pain (sudden one!) once in every few months.
I had an interview this afternoon with a French guy who
runs a small French school in my neighborhood (it was
a mere coincidence I found his job post!).
He was a nice, mellow guy who seemed easy to work with.
He said he has 3 other candidates, will let me know by
end of next week, but he seemed positive about the fact
that I live only few blocks away.
I went back to Roppongi office to help that advisory guy
yesterday. I had to run back home by 1pm because Koki had high
fever and threw up on Sunday afternoon. Toru stayed home
in the morning with him while I went to work.
I am starting to see his showing more and more leniency
towards my work situations and I am starting to appreciate
that. After all, working for him may not be so bad even if
it does not require much of my bilingual skill.
Just when I started thinking settling down with the
current work pace, 2 emails arrived from translation companies
I applied for several weeks ago.
Life has a funny turn always, just when you think you are
ready to let go of your ego or whatever, things start to
run smoother.
Well, they are just asking me to come into an iterview, so
there is no promise of hire, but if I were not going to take
an offer anyway, then why waste a time to even go for
an interview, right?
I should really think, consider what I really want to do,
what is best for me but at the same time, I should be
considerate not to waste anyone's time or generosity.
Ah, time to go pick up Hiroto. Bye for now.

七夕、wishing up on a star
Yesterday was Tanabata in Japan.
On Tanabata, children write their wishes on a piece of paper and hang it on a bamboo tree. Tanabata's story originally came from China, where a prince and princess are apart from each other in the sky and they are only able to meet each other once a year, on July 7th when stars gather and make a river.
Koki wrote his wish, "I want to be a soccer player".
Hiroto scribbled on the paper and on the back, Koki drew all of us and I wrote down, "I hope everyone's health in year 2016".
This week was slow, with Monday called off by the advisory guy and Hiroto having a high fever on Tuesday night making me calling Wednesday off.
Hiroto's fever came from the runny nose, an ear infection again.
Poor little guy.
His doctor gave him antibiotics again. His nose stopped running yesterday and he went back to the day care today.
A children book translation flew in last Friday so this week I worked on it (it was actually better that my Monday was off) and delivered just a few hours ago.
I really enjoy translation work and in near future I hope to find more work in translation.
I realize I clearly need to define to myself what I prioritize in my life right now before making application or jumping on an opportunity.
(Yes, I am finally seeing this...after all those stumbling)
With Hiroto and Koki, situation changes day by day and I need to find a job that lets me accommodate such changes.
It is unfortunate but reality is I cannot make 100% commitment to my job at this point in my life and that as much as the wage is important, it is more important that I need someone who can really be flexible about my family situation.
This means no full time (of course), close location (within 40 minutes from my house, this really limits workplace), bilingual work and possibly partial remote work when one of the children falls sick or a school event arises.
I have this trauma from 311 about distance.
I was in Ebisu when that big earthquake hit us in 2011. I could come back home walking within an hour from my workplace to pick up Koki, but Toru was in Shinjuku where he spent more than 3 hours getting home.
I keep thinking what happens if both of us were that far away from 2 boys, it is heart stopping just to imagine.. scary thought but definitely something we need to consider seriously.
Now with more children, I feel more insecure about being away more than a certain distance from home. I want to be able to come back swiftly to pick up my boys if another quake hits us again (I am hoping it won't happen but Japan is such an earthquake prone country that no one can predict).
The other thing, an English environment.
Maybe I spent too long working for non Japanese. I seem to communicate better in English when it comes to work...
I think I am going to take time (really) to find my next job.
August is coming up when businesses are slow and I will be slow as well with summer break.
I hope to find and start something by September maybe, though I am always open for an opportunity.
Have a nice weekend!

So, I went to see the So Cal guy yesterday.
He was really a nice guy but unfortunately it didn't work out.
The position requires looking after financing and that is one of
the departments I am not so keen about (or good at), plus
his wife sits in the office. His wife also seemed very nice but
from my experience, it is tough to escalate things when there
is an issue in the office when there is a family member of the
boss involved.
Location perfect, wage perfect, but no, too bad.
I have 2 other inquiries I am waiting a reply for. Hopefully
they come back soon.
Oh and the guy running private banking advisory, hmm I wonder
when I am going back to his office next time. I know he made
next Monday off so I guess next Wednesday?
I found this perfect position that made me excited for a few mins
and I realized the schedule wouldn't work out for me as they
are looking for someone who can stay till 5:30PM at an office
located near Tokyo Station which is about 40 minutes away from
my house. Koki's public after school program which will start from
July 21st (the first day of summer holiday) is only up to 6:15PM.
This position requirest some over time hours per month, and
I wouldn't be able to stay, so.
Too bad, again.
Well, life has its own turn, so I will wait until mine turns around
and tells me what is my role at this point of life.
Monday was a non school day for Koki as he went to school on
last Saturday for an open school day.
It has been a while I spent time with Koki alone. I asked him what
he wanted to do and he said he wanted to make pancakes with
me, so we went to a grocery market and bough cream, mix
berries. I whipped cream while Koki made pancakes on a hot pan.
It was so delicious that it made Koki's eyes shine.
Time like this, makes me realize how precious it is.
Always work work work in my brain is no good. Time to relax and
enjoy time with children is so precious as they grow so fast.
Yesterday was Hiroto's 7 month check up (tho he will turn 8 month
in a few days). Doctor told me his teeth came out already.
Hiroto crawls now and is faster everyday. The day before yesterday
he clang to a chair and stood up, already.
Kids grow so fast.
I have a PTA gathering at 2:30PM today at school.
I am meeting up with 3 other members in my team to prepare for
the 1st grade parents (mostly moms) gathering which will start at
3:00PM. I'd better go and do some work before I leave.
Bye for now.

At Lunch Break

This morning I got to Roppongi earlier because with no rain I left home on my bicycle. I stopped by at a Starbucks on the ground floor of Midtown before going to office, sat outside, took a short break.
This 15-20 min break in the morning before starting a day is a precious time for me as it is the only time when I can think nothing but just "take a break".

I came to work yesterday and we had a talk about my wage and work descriptions. My employer raised my hourly wage up to what I was earning at the international school, a minimum wage in my mind, so I am grateful for that.
Work itself is nothing exciting but doable and is ok for now.
More issue now is that my employer asks me to take 1 hour break out of my short day, asks me to leave early when he is not at the office, asks me to take one of the 2 work days of a week... this hints me that maybe he is not really OK with the wage raise. He also told me he will be gone most of August so there will be not much work in August.
Hmmm. Something strange here.
But, when I turn to myself, with 2 small children (maybe Koki is not so small any more?) and hectic school schedule, I can't ask too much, I guess.
On a separate occasion,

I am meeting up with a guy from California tomorrow morning to possibly discuss a job opportunity. By the fact that this education related business originally started in California and the representative of Tokyo Office is from Orange County, California, I am already looking forward to it (feeling the California vibe already, or not?!).
Wish me luck.
