Ultraman

We took Koki to an Ultraman Base in Kawasaki Lazona on Saturday.
He loved playing in a ball pool or tranpolin, but he cried at
a sight of a bad guy coming out on a stage on a hero show.

?th generation Ultraman
The other night I was watching a late night TV program
that was showing a preview of a documentary file called
 "Nursery University".

It was about parents in the richest area of New York trying to get
their kids into the best nursery school in the neighborhood.

I heard a bit about this in LA as well, how good school has a long
waiting list to get in,
but to see it real, it was surprising how any metropolitan city
is experiencing a similar phenomenon.

The only difference is,
in Tokyo, parents try to get their kids into public nursery schools
where in NY, most parents try for expensive private schools.

It think this difference is from the fact that,

1. in Tokyo, kids go to nursery schools to be taken care of on behalf
of their parents who work,

2. in NY, many rich kids go to nursery schools for educational or social purpose,

though, there are certain (rich) areas in Tokyo where parents enter
their kids into expensive nursery schools for the same reason as NY parents,
but they are usually non Japanese parents and international schools.

Roppongi

The 2nd anniversary party of the company I work for right now wrapped up
successfully with 32 attendees, rather small but a warm party.

They party took place on the 51st floor of Roppongi Hills Club,
one of the finest executive membership club in Tokyo, which served a
great view of Tokyo,

yet being a MC and coordinator of the party (the host, my boss, was busy
greeting/ socializing with clients),
I could not really enjoy the view.

Nijikai, after party, was given to those who are close to us and 10 people
including the staff stayed.
I chatted with our important client from the Netherlands and his secretary
about Holland.  I told them how much I loved Amsterdam and wished I
could live there for few years.

Before I said goodbye, our client told me,

"A person like you should seek to live outside Japan for at least one more time
in your life, especially Europe if you never lived there."

Past several years, especially after I had Koki,
I have been suppressing this kind of thought intentionally.
I don't know why, but for some reason, I felt I had to do it to settle down which
seems like a best solution for peace of mind.

But, after our client told me what he said,
I realize I still have a bit in myself which seeks for such opportunity,

therefore, I decided to let my mind be open about it.

Never know what the life brings.

fat mama

I found this small jazz cafe in my neighborhood.
I found it few years ago and since then I have been wanting to check it out and
last week I finally went in. An old man with quiet voice explained his coffee
menu and then his jazz vinyl collections.

I requested Theloneous Monk and he played Monk's memorial concert for me.

I was watching people come in and out of the cafe.
Some people come for the purpose of jazz and others merely to eat or to drink coffee,
careless for jazz.

A perch for everyone. Cafe like this used to exist everywhere, especially in Tokyo,
in small shopping streets, but nowdays they are replaced by franchise coffee shops
like Starbucks or Tullys, such  shame.

I intend to go there every once in a while, with no wifi but just to do nothing
but to meditate with jazz.

Mamatoko in Odaiba

I got together with my girl friends and their kids in Odaiba on Saturday.
Sunny day all day, a break from the rain season.

We ate lunch, kids played, at Mamatoko, a family restaurant with buffet and play rooms.
Because we only had 70 minutes to eat and play (this is so Tokyo... limitaions...),
we went outside to the beach area afterwards.

With Koki wanting to run or climb, I could not sit down and talk with my friends , but
yet I had a great time.

I wish we could do this  more often.
Next time, maybe in a house, easier to talk.

Surfing

So I went, surfing, at Kugenuma Beach, Shonan.
My friend came to pick me up at 7:30ish and we got to the beach around 9:15am.
After a thorough warm up, we went in the water around 9:30am until I was in until noon-ish with a break in middle.

First half was all spent on catching up.  After taking a rest in middle, I could see a wave, judge a ridable wave, paddle at the right speed and catch and ride it to the shore, just like I used to, except I could not pick up the bottom turn which I was starting to pick up few years ago before I went in a long break from surfing due to pregnancy. This will be my thing next time I go.

Surf was knee to thigh high at set (yes, at set!) but still ridable.
I was on a 7 foot spongey fan board my friend rent me and so I waited a little out (toward the shore) from the line up and caught all the small ones which all other surfers did not go for, sometimes regular ones if I were lucky with only few on a line up. Yet, towards I started to wanting more, bigger and fun waves to ride toward the end.

I asked my friend to take me to a Chiba beach next time, Chiba is directly facing Pacific Ocean so waves are usually rougher (but still way weaker than Hawai'i or California) and bigger, tide stronger.

My whole body sore, but it feels good. Stoke is in me now.

California vibe

Taro Okamoto
I went to Omotesando, the most "high end" part of Tokyo.
Though it is within an half an hour train ride range from our place, I rarely come here. Things are too expensive and too crowded on the weekend.

Yet, it is nice to step in this Omotesando-Aoyama area once in a while to feel "okay" in a culture/ fashion sense.

Though, Toru and I prefer more of "Ura-Harajuku" area, back streets of Omotesando. Many small shops, restaurants and cafes are located on small tangling streets and fun to explore (especially alone).

My relative Hiroko came along and we found this industrial looking cafe under a pancake restaurant recommended by a shop staff I boutht a pari of artsy yellow pants for 3000 yen (about 38USD). Initially we were planning to got to the pancake place but as soon as we heard loud chirps of young crowd, we silently turned around and stepped down the outside staircase.
1st floor cafe was empty and looked so serene, plus both of us love coffee so we went in.

One guy who was sitting by the entrance with a laptop in front opened the door for us and he seemed to be an owner of the cafe.  It was cafe and gallery and just opened a day ago, he explained. He seemed to have this vibe that is not typical to Japanese mid age man and from the conversation, I sensed he either used to or currently lives in California. All the artworks displayed in the cafe was by California artists.

Another California moment was when I met with Craig who is from California running a small design firm in Tokyo for lasts16 years or so. We met through craiglist Tokyo (met Craig through craiglist, haha) and he offered me series of freelance translation projects to help him launch and introduce his idea of California designs to Japan. I met with him last week in his office in Yoyogi and the conversation just took off and it was easily 2 hours when we said "talk to you soon!".

Ever since I came back to Japan in year 2005, I never really looked back on the days in California, but this recent interactions with California vibes made me want to re-visit the place.

Thinking of you, So-Cal.
