Yesterday was 49th day from the day Toru's grandma passed away.
In Buddhism, this is the day the deceased finishes his/her journey
to become a buddha (in some sects, it is believed that the deceased
becomes a buddha soon after he or she passes away).
A period between yin and yen, life and death.
During this 49 days, grandma went through 7 trials to receive a
judgement of her dos in her life which determines which world
she will be born into in her next life (called "rin ne", reincarnation).
This period is also spent to purify the spirit.
If the deceased surpassed the expectancy of the judge with his or her
life being full of good deeds, then she or he will not reincarnate.
She or he has no need to go back to human world to build good deeds,
he or she will simply go to heaven.
From Buddhism point of view, this is why there are people who are
full of benevolence and do lots of good things without any benefit
beyond people's imagination,
where there are others who do horrible things which any insane person
cannot believe.
Different people, different spirit levels.
Good thing is if you manage to realize that in this life,
you can focus on upraising your spirit level doing good things in this life
so your next life will be an easier one (hopefully).
In any case, after 49 days, our grandma is probably taking a rest!
Wow, please put your feet out and rest well grandma.
Gassho.
