Value Engineering

Wishing you and your loved ones
joy and happiness in year 2014!

From Christmas to New Year,
we had lots of company with family
members gathering and it made me
feel more of a holiday essence than
past few years
although we are still in grief of Toru's
grandma.
We will pay a visit to the cemetery
this weekend, one year has passed
since she passed away.

This year, we have a big project coming
up before the summer.
Our house will be put up in Tokyo!!

Our three story house is now going through a government's strict authorization process (to ensure the
house can resist against fires and
certain level of earthquakes).

Along the side, we are working on
what's called Value Engineering which
determines the details of our house
such as appliances, kitchen, etc.

At this point, our kitchen will likely
be IKEA except for electronic
appliances which
we will probably order domestic
maker's through internet.
Almost every appliance we will
search and buy online ourselves
which can save lots of money than
buying through a construction
company which many people do
when they buy a house through a
HM(home maker, we call a big
home builder such as Sekisui,
Mitsui etc. a home maker).

My job career wise,
I'd like to give it a notch.
I'd like to bring my writing level (English)
to a report writing level,
and interpretation to a semi-simultaneous level.

That's my new year resolution.
We'll see what I will write in a year from
now.

We are back in Yokohama from Saturday night.
On Sunday, we had an appointment with IKEA to
plan out our kitchen.
We started at 11am finished at 13:30.
I was amazed how Koki held up (of course, with
iPhone games tho...).

Today started out with rain and I had to but drive
Koki to his day care, which I try to avoid.

Unless you go way out in a countryside,
anywhere you go, parking is an issue here in Japan.
What is so strange is that although Koki's day care
is located in a small village with sparsely placed houses
and rice fields, parking space is limited even on streets.

Rice field (or vegetable field) owners complain and
limited the area we can park on streets! just because
it is along their fields or something.

I'd like to ride bicycle as much as possible
because of that and also there is one mother that is
in charge of looking after things after school and
help teachers at school (I guess they take turns to
do that role) and she assumingly got upset when I
parked in a spot where it was just recently taken out
from a parking spot for the school which I wasn't
aware because I did not attend the meeting they
decided that due to my work.

Anyway, I stay out of mother circle or whatever you call
it to stay out of unnecessary troubles and have been
successful in it so far, but this time
unexpectedly a trouble dropped from out of nowhere.

My theory is that
more mothers, more troubles,
because mothers are such subjective beings with children
and often lose objectivity. Of course, I am no exception
since I am also a mother, but I am fully aware of such
nature of being a mother and try to watch myself.

Some say it is only natural that mothers are subjective and
protective. But at the same time, social ability and balance
is also important if you are part of a society, I think.

I only hang out with friends who are balanced and can
stay objective and
I am not at all a type who sacrifices her individuality
to blend in, so for some extent I will expect not everyone
to like me.

Well, now rain is subsiding, so I will walk to pick up Koki
at 2pm today. Finding an alternative solution always
alleviates your stress:)

Last night hot bath was a good thinking.
The warmth put me into sleep fast.

Today was another beautiful sunny day.
I made lunch box for myself, Koki and
my dad so we could go for a walk to a
big temple to see Tengu statues Koki
has been wanting to see.

Tengu: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengu

Being December, my home town,
which is always packed with tourists
everywhere, had less people everywhere
starting from the bus we took.

The temple was serene and had a crisp
air surrounding especially high up
where Tengu statues stood on a steep
hill side.

We came back home all mellow and
I was to eat some snacks and have
tea before I started folding Origami
paper with Koki,
but suddenly tons of emails and
Txt messages started coming into
my iPhone.

Back to reality and I barely had
time to play with Koki ( my mom
plays with him real well) and
enjoy the relaxing bath time with
Koki.

Counted only up to 10 in a hot
tub and only read 1 book for him
in bed and I wax back to
business.

Tomorrow is my moms friend's
birthday party and Koki and I have
a chore of picking up a cake
in the morning,

so, good night.

実家にて、at my parents'

Windows 7。

Koki and I are at my parents' house.
I came to set up my dad's new PC with Windows 7.
His long time friend XP is too slow and Microsoft
is terminating the support.

At age 77, new softwares are overwhelming, but
Word and Outlook are simple enough for him
to spend sometime to get used to.

Mom and I moved around furniture between rooms
on the 2nd floor of the house to make room in a
smallest room for Koki and I to sleep.
Now my mom has her own room back to have a
good night sleep.

In the course of cleaning up the rooms and furniture,
we found so many reminiscent stuff from my child-
hood. Precious.
My mom gave me purses and bags she does not use
any more.

I always admired her jewerlies and purses as a small
child and little by little she is passing them down to
my 2 sisters and myself, taking turns.

This time a small cute red handbag is added to my
wardrobe.

My hands are freezing and my back sore from typing
inside bed... I should reheat the bath again to
soak myself before going to sleep.

Good night.

(In Japan, bathing is a serious deal.
Especially in winter, we like to prepare a very
hot bath, like a small hot spring, and soak ourselves
in it before going to bed.
Usually Japanese bathroom has a big washing area
with shower, with a big bath tub right next to it.
Not many people have a separate shower room like
many western houses do.
Many people have a chair inside the washing area and
wash well with a washing cloth before soaking themselves
in  the hot water.
Many use gas bath system which allows the bath water
to be reheated to whatever temperature we want, with
automatic reheat function.
I personally like 41C in the winter.)

なんと, a scam

We had a potential client meeting this noon, so we thought,
but turned out it was a scam.
My boss suddenly changed his tone and scared the guy away.

So strange.
Someone sent someone in to check on us.
For what?
To buy us? A competitor?
We don't know.

Anyway, we decided to pull our guard up a bit.
Hmmm.

I could be busier, I keep telling myself.
I even went into some interviews and got offers,
but it just doesn't pay, with Koki's day care fee,
and lower wage, to go out and work...

Some may say it is better than nothing, but
it is almost like I could earn that monthly wage
by adding 1 hour of current work for a week or
something.

So, I figured it is better to wait, again.

It'd be best if my current clients (2 main + 2)
got busier, but I won't manage if they all got
busier all at once.

Indeed, stabilizing income by freelancing is
tough.

Good night.

なーんだか, what can I say...

Photo is a friendly piggy at a nearby gas station.
He is quite big (bigger than a small pet size pig) and he
entertains neighbor kids.

I am so used to seeing him all the time but my friend
exclaimed at a sight of him and took a picture,
so I took one too.

There was a sports festival at a nearby university over
the weekend and they were letting outsiders try out
all kinds of sports they practice at the university (sports
university).

Koki tried out tennis, archery, ultimate (frisbee) and inline
hockey. Koki especially showed interest in inline hockey.
But because the sports is not so well known and has small
player population, there are only handful envornment for
kids to play.

This afternoon, Koki is going to his soccer class, but it may
not be a bad idea to look into sports that is not so major
as soccer but fun to play.
