amis de koki

Roxane and William

Today's picture is Koki's little friends in France enjoying the stickers we sent to them.
And a video below is Koki thanking Roxane for a drawing Roxane drew for him (and a gift they sent to Koki). We really hope to visit and let kids play together sometime in near future.
They live a small village in France and they seem to be living a majorly different life from us here in Tokyo. Just like our friends in Hawai'i (and also several in LA), it is very nice to have friends in different parts of the world.

Second picture is Emma, a baby of my friend Rio and her husband Shawn. Very cute. Welcome to the world!!

三寒四温, spring is nearing

We are starting to have warm days in between cold days, a sign of spring nearing.
A warm day tricks us to think spring has come and dress less and next day a freezing day comes and we realize it is yet winter. This is typical February in Tokyo.

My Mon - Thurs 9- 17 dispatch work has changed to a flexible work from home.
My boss terminated his contract with a client and it no more requires for him or myself to go to a client's office.  This was lucky for me as I was starting to feel pressed about juggling 2 jobs, another job I started on a side.

Last one week was getting adjusted to my full work from home schedule.

We all wake up at 8:00- 8:30am, Koki and I eat breakfast together while Toru leaves for work around 9:15am with a sandwich bag to eat at his office. I take Koki to his day care around 9:45-10am, I either go grocery shopping at nearby shopping arcade or come home to do house chores until I start my work around 11am.  I go pick up Koki at 5pm and we eat dinner together around 6-6:30pm. Take a bath around 8-3:30pm. Toru comes home around 9-10pm if on early week.

This schedule is an ideal one, but in reality I work less and do more house chores like cleaning out the storage area or cook for food storage etc.
Through the first week I learned I need to manage my time and work arrangement between 2 jobs better going forward. Otherwise, everything becomes jeopardy.

Another week has started!

社長だろうが、間違っていればお言葉してOK(もちろん常識範囲内で)。

Koki's lingering cough finally ceased after staying home for 2 days (except he played with Maya on Wednesday afternoon for few hours outside).  He was happy to go back to his day care on Thursday and Friday.

Friday I had another business meeting to sit in (this time no interpretation) at Westin Hotel Tokyo, one of high end hotel with business capability in Tokyo.  Last Friday's Roppongi Hills was much more luxurious and better view due to the location. Westin's executive lounge was somewhat plain but their service was very good and their business facility (meeting rooms, business center to do scanning etc.) was much better. This is probably due to the fact that Westin is older and the area it is in (Ebisu is a mix of business and rich residential area) and Roppongi Hills is one of the newly built building standing in infamous entertainment centre, Roppongi (many foreigners like to visit this town for night clubs etc.).

A meeting finished close to 1pm and I worked with my boss to sort out invoices and any other tax-related paperworks for year end tax filing due end of March. I got home around 4 pm and cooked dinner before I went to pick up Koki at 5pm.

This kind of work-life style is not too common in Tokyo and I am a few of lucky ones I feel.  This is because ever since I came back to Tokyo, I always worked with non Japanese business owners who focus on work results rather than how or where I work. If I get things done on time, they don't interfere. I like it that way.

Because Japanese society is still very much submerged in an old fashion, bureaucratic and feudal style, it is rare to see Japanese business owners working like they do, but I am hoping in near future we see more and more of them taking a step to change how they work. That way, Tokyo will be a much easier and better place to live and work for not only us Japanese but also many non Japanese who now play important roles in boosting our down economy esp after the earthquake and tsunami.

I stayed home all day yesterday, alone, to finish up the piled up research work from last and this week.  This is partly because Koki has been sick but also I mentally did not pull myself to get to it. Instead I kept doing other works, setting it aside.  On Friday night a push came to shove with my boss coming back to Tokyo on Monday, I decided to at least get some of it done this weekend.

Koki and Toru left for Toru's parents' house in the afternoon yesterday and stayed over, so I was physically alone at home to work.  It's been a while since I had all the time to myself and everything around me was so enticing, it was hard to focus on just work after all.  Yet, I managed to put together a report by 1 am midnight.

Though I had to work, it was a real nice break for me to spend a full day alone, just looking after myself. Eat whenever I feel like it, rest whenever I am tired, make tea when I want, take a long bath not worrying about anyone else. I woke up late this morning, took time to drip a good dark coffee and ate a relaxing breakfast.

Once in a while, it is nice to be alone.  Just focusing on yourself.  Very luxurious, if you are a parent, you know what I mean (unless you have someone looking after all the things you need to take care of, then you are few of the lucky ones;-)

Have a pleasant Sunday everyone.

Koki is down with a bad cough today. It has been lingering since 2 weeks ago.  He threw up from coughing too hard last Thursday and I took him to a pediatrician who prescribed him two types of liquid medicine to be consumed through a neubilizer which the doctor lent us for free (in Tokyo, all medical expenses, except for those you buy from pharmacy off shelves, are covered by the government, 100% free, up until your child is 15 years old).  He got well over the weekend and then as he went back to his day care on Monday, he came back sick again.  This makes me wonder what is out there at a day care....

So, Koki stayed home today.
It has been a while since I stayed home all day with him, alone.
I remembered how we used to spend time together all the time before he started his day care. This was back early 2010 (I went back to work in July of 2010).
We've come a long way, Koki quickly adjusted to a life with friends at a day care that now at an age of 2 years and 8 months, he doesn't want to stay with his mom at home, he'd rather go play with his friends at a day care.

Sometimes I wished I did not work and stayed with Koki to play etc., but the reality is that Koki is starting to grow out of his baby period when he is starting to build his own world, and I am used to the lifestyle of juggling between working and motherhood that it has become part of me and it is hard to imagine staying in home all day everyday... especially in Tokyo.

Good night.

やる気の問題, a matter of dedication

It snowed again last night. This time more that house roofs around our building were still white with snow this morning. Koki was all excited last night after taking bath when I told him it was snowing outside. He woke up early this morning waking both Toru and myself up claiming he wants to go outside to see the snow.
At the sight of snow falling, I decided to work from home today.  I walked with Koki in a different roads to walk on remaining snow in back streets on our way to his day care.  I vacuumed our place and it was around 11 AM at last I started on my research work.
Oh boy.. this research, seems like a hard target.  I've been spending more than 2 days on a single research and not finding much useful information.  Since this is a research to help my boss target down the countries he will suggest for his clients to focus their business on, it is critical, yet, finding English sources of non English speaking countries (especially when it comes to incidence or surgery of a certain disease etc.) it is time consuming and in many occasions not effective.

Another job to start this Friday!
The business owner came back from LA finally and contacted me. He printed my business card already and my first job is to sit in a business lunch meeting with him this Friday at Roppongi Hills Club, one of very high end membership only service for, I don't know whom, I guess whoever can afford it.
I guess this will be one of few occasions I have chance to peak in such a place, so I will investigate and report here.

It looks like this new job will be a nice change in my work pattern (I've been sitting in front of PC 7 hours straight; except 1 hour lunch break;  everyday without any socialization ever since last October).

Do you say I need more dedication?
Well, I will get back to an endless research work now, for at least another hour before I go pick up Koki.

初雪, snow, first this season

It was first time to snow in Tokyo this winter.  Koki was all excited when I told him it was snowing and he said, "snow? or rain? Can I use that umbreall?".  I bought him a blue umbrella and a pair of blue rain boots last month, but since then Tokyo has been experiencing a very dry weather, no rain since then, so he has not had an opportunity to use them. He walked all the way to his day care school with a new umbrella and new boots, all happy and proud. It was so much fun to walk with Koki in snow, it reminded me of how excited I was when I was a kid.
As I postponed my meeting, I stayed home all day yesterday after taking Koki to school.  House cleaning and laundry in the morning, checking a TV show I recorded on a blueray disk, checking internet, and baking a quiche in the afternoon and time was up for me. It was time to go pick up Koki.
Still, it was nice to spend time for myself, isolated from rest of the snowy world, all cozy and warm inside. Sometimes everyone needs her own time, a nice break from everyday busy and chaotic life.

Have a nice weekend.

。, in the morning

Sometimes I wake up 5 am-ish and this is when I went to sleep with something left in mind I haven't taken care of or want to take care of.  This morning was, oysters. I bought them the day before yesterday and the package says it is good until tomorrow (they are in water, tightly sealed in a plastic container and sold at a grocery market; lasts longer than buying raw ones which are only good for few hours).  It's for cooking and not for raw consumption, but still, the fresher the better, always.
So, I woke up and cooked a "oyster, spinach and shimeji mushroom gratin".
All I need to do is to put the oyster-mushroom white sauce on top of spinach in a casserole dish, top it with bread and cheese and put it in an oven for 10-15min when I get home tonight.

Tres bien, but sleepy...
