Sunday again

Rip Curl

9 day holiday, GW, went by so fast.
We went fishing and surfing, that was the highlight
of our holiday. It was a great holiday.

Koki now enjoys beach and ocean which is great.
He used to be afraid of the surf but he got over it
a few years ago.
Now Hiroto, but so far he seems to love the ocean.
He now wears a size 2 Rip Curl wetsuit Koki used to
wear, loves to feel the surf on his feet.

Toru managed to paddle out to line up and catch
some surfs but I was not confident enough in terms
of stamina to do so, so instead, I caught some soups
way toward the shore from the line up and rode
my board sitting on it.
Its been like this past several years since Koki was born.
My stamina level came down so steeply after giving
birth the first and even more so after the end one
and I just don't feel confident enough to paddle out,
catch surfs, come back to the shore etc.

But, our plan of going to Hawaii this summer is now
solid, I really need to start doing some kind of work
out to pump up my stamina level so I can at least
surf a few times at Waikiki Beach, and possibly
if we can, catch Dave, our loco friend in Oahu, to
go along with him to his regular surfs elsewhere.

Last week was a new week form me at a new work
place and so I rode train to work, but from tomorrow
I will resume my bicycle commute once again.
My new workplace is 2 times as much further than the
previous one, so it will be more exercise for me, perfect.

On one Sunday evening

Pot stickers

GW started yesterday for us except for Koki who has school
tomorrow and Tuesday.
Around end of April to beginning of May every year, we have
a block of holidays where many people take paid holidays to
fill in the regular days sandwiched between national holidays
to create one week long (or mroe depending on a year)
holiday, and we call it Golden Week (GW).
This year, May 1st and 2nd are regular weekdays so Toru and I
took those 2 days holiday and starting from yesterday, we
have 9 days in a row holiday.
Since we plan to let Koki skip school a few days before the summer
holiday this year to go to Hawai'i,
we decided he should go to school
on May 1st and 2nd so he won't miss his school curriculum.

Yesterday, Koki's 2 best friends came to sleep over.
Koki requested his favorite dish, pork and vege pot stickers for dinner,
so I bought 800g ground pork (in Japan, pot sticker are
usually pork where in US you see many chicken ones), 1/2
cut cabbage, 1 bundle of Chinese chives, garlic, ginger
and 3 bags of dumpling skin (40 sheets per bag x 3 =120!),
but I tend to make the dumplings over stuffed,
so I ended up with about 70 pot sticker,
with 8 left overs which went in the freezer.
(I will enjoy them on my weekday off lunch).

Recipe is nothing special, but frying them requires some
experience.
Trick I use is,
-----------------
1. Boil water.

2. DO NOT heat the pan but spread one table spoon of
sesame oil (or any kind of oil) on a surface of a frying pan.

3. Place pot stickers on a frying pan. Make sure you place
pot stickers apart from each other by at least 0.5cm or so,
do not put them against each other like you see them at
Chinese restaurants (they have strong heat different from
home kitchen).

4. Pour in the boiled water so that it covers 1/4 of
pot stickers. Place a lid.

5. Turn on the heat and keep the heat at medium to high
and keep it on for 5 minutes (check to see they are not
burnt after 3 minutes).

6. When the water evaporates, pour some sesame oil on
top of pot stickers and let them fry for 2-3 minutes.
(Make sure you don't burn them)

Enjoy your pot stickers!
--------------------

The trick is that you do not turn the heat on until you place
the stickers, and you pour in boiling water not cold water.

This afternoon, I finally got to speak to Claudia on Skype,
with whom I have been discussing we should get on Skype
to chat for a while through Facebook and recently emails
because nowdays I rarely get on Facebook.

We were studying design together at UCLA Extension back
in early 2000s and now she's back in Bogota, Colombia and
I am here back in Tokyo, Japan.

It was 13 years ago (time flies!) when both Toru and I attended
her wedding party held at her sister's house in Pasadena.
Our Quark Express (my gosh, it is ancient!) teacher Pucky
was also there on a nice sunny afternoon.

We had 2 other friends taking the same design course at
UCLA, Charlotte who went back to South France with her
husband Alex little after we moved back to Tokyo, and
Marie who is originally from down southeast US is still
there in LA and we are connected through Facebook.
That part of my life in LA is one of the dearest memories I have.

Now fully absorbed in Japanese culture and its society,
I realize I have changed a bit in some ways but there is
a lot of me that has not changed and it felt so comfortble
and reminiscing to converse in English with my friend,
being care free and say what I think or feel.

As much as I am part of this society and have been
living in it for past 10 years, I realize this is why I cherish
my friendship with my friends outside Japan, as much as
I cherish my friends here.
Relationship fundamentally is the same , but because oc the difference in
culture background,  how the society
 is constructed, and
how the language is built and used,
anyhow the relationship and conversations we exchange
is a bit different,
making me sometimes feel more comfortable being in a
bicultural environment and relationship.
Of course, my Japanese part is as important as the other
part, but recently I realize it is just me.
Just because I was born to Japanese born parents and
having brought up half of my life in Japan does not make
me anyone but me, nationality free, border-less.

After saying goodbye to Claudia on Skype,
I felt like I just found something that I have been looking for
in my drawer past few years,
with a California sunset image in my mind,
I realized it was very precious that I got to be
at where I was back 10 some years ago with all these
friends that I met in LA back then.
Even if I went back to LA now, things won't be the same
and that makes it even more precious.

I am missing California once again this evening.

Good night.

Jack

Onto next step...

Tokyo Tower

から、英語のインタビューのtranscribing(書き取り?)

Tokyo is experiencing a summer like Sunday today.
So nice. We are letting windows open, let the breeze
come in. Feels good.

Toru's parents came over for an early lunch this afternoon.
We walked to a good soba (buckwheat noodle) restaurant
and enjoyed their good service and good food.

Koki left for his soccer practice around 12:45 and rest of
us had a birthday cake (for me and Toru both born in
April) with coffee and tea.

Hiroto is still taking a nap, I should wake him up soon
since taking too long a nap affects his sleep at night.

I landed a new part time job starting right after
Golden Week holiday (Apr 29-May 7 this year), which is
an accounting firm, I will be a point of contact for
their non Japanese client.
I go there 3 days a week, remaining 2 days is to help out
Jack plus someone I don't remember replied to my old
old job application email and asked if I were available
to do their interview transcription few hours a week
so I took on the offer.

I will be back freelancing. Feels so right.
Last several months I have been trying to make myself
fit into a tight box but I realize there is no way I can
fit into that box.

Feels so good to be free again.
This maybe a riskier path to take, yet  I prefer to take it.
I don't want to put myself up for something I don't want to do.

Why do it if it is not fun.

Enjoy rest of your Sunday.

Cherry blossom in full bloom.

新学期 back to school

Koki went bk to school today.
He is a 2nd grader from today with same classmates except for one girl who moved to Osaka and same teacher from previous school year (in Japan, school year starts from April).

Hiroto also moved up his class to 1 year old class with 3 classmates and a new boy (2 children moved to a public nursery school who accepts children up to age 6).
We like his current teachers and school for its small size and friendly environment so we are hoping he will move to a new public school who will start accepting from next April or a school Koki used to attend before he entered in a kindergarten (this one is only 3 mins from our house).

I ended up turning down my contract renewal with my current dispatched workplace. President asked me again if I could increase my shift from 4 to 5 days so this time, I thought about how I was going to respond because the workload has been increasing and just from that reason, it would make sense to add another day. But, and this was a big "but", Do I really want to work here doing what Im doing?,
and the answer was no.
So, I went bk to negotiate to shorten my contractual period from 3 mos to 1.
Why waste time on 1. something I dont enjoy and 2. their precious time and money if I were going to leave after the contract fulfills anway, right? They should invest in finding someone else.

So, I will be free from May!

I plan to go direct from next opportunity, no agency. They are, for me, just a nuisance that hinders me from arranging conditions and environment I feel comfortable working in.

I will just keep it simple, free-lance, from hereon.

Good night.

Self investment

On Wednesday, I went in a meeting with a lawyer with Jack and
2 others (1 consultant, 1 bilingual personnel for taking minutes).
My role was to interpret the conversation for Jack because
the meeting was carried in Japanese although lawyers (there
were 4 of them) seemed to understand what Jack was saying.

We got out of the meeting around 11:30AM and we hopped
on a taxi and went to Tokyo American Club for lunch.
Jack thanked me for joining the meeting and the person who
took minutes gave me a compliment about my level of interpretation.
She told me with my language capability, I should be able to work
in a big non Japanese corporations because often she sees
bilingual personnel working in her office (American medical
device company) being promoted just for the language ability.

I guess I could have taken that path if I did not move to US
to study graphic design in late 20s. Even after I came back
from it in early 30s, I guess I could have looked further for
a better opportunity in a bigger corporation but anyhow
I did not end up there. Interesting, I wonder what happened
where.

In any case, life has its own turn and I guess that path was
not mine to take.

Next day, Thursday, I went to dispatch work place and I was
very much demotivated to take on boring tasks. Hours
passed and at lunch, I was chatting with a woman who works
there on freelance basis and she told me that the night before
she attended an orientation at a school who trains professinoal
translator and interpreters.

This made me remember back in my college years, I was taking
a similar course at a different school, a short course too, during
my spring break. I did not continue to study further back then
because I felt I needed some business experiences.

This caught my attention.

By end of Friday, I was all ready to decline my next contract
renewal with the current dispatch company and look for an
interpretation work, but slowly I started to see that maybe
if I could keep my current 4 days a week dispatch work or
possibly decrease it to 3 days a week even better,
I could allocate the remaining days for helping out Jack
and attending the school to be trained to be a professional interpreter.

If Jack's business starts to pick up, I will think either dropping
current work and concentrate on his business, or
arrange something else. We'll see how it goes.

It maybe about time I made a self investment to kick myself
a notch and stop complaining about work and job hopping.

結局 its just me

This morning I am meeting up with Jack and two others to attend a mtg at a law firm in Hibiya.

I was asked to increase the number of my work days at current company but I politely requested to keep as is, 4 days a week, keeping Wednesday off.

Instead I decided to resume my bilingual assistance work for Jack which I have been doing the last 5 years on wfh basis.

I enjoy working with Jack because he is open minded and his due dilligence type projects are interesting and provide opportunity to learn and grow in what I do best, bilingual support including meeting interpretation and translation.

Current office work I do 4 days a week provides steady income and it is nice to have such but just very boring and no creativity required there. Also, the company cultute is very domestic which doesnot really suit me. The president keeps saying "globalism" yet he does not see his policies and rules are uptight and very old Japanese fashioned. I found this out by working  closely with him last 4 months.

This is why Id rather keep it a part time. I think this works better for both ends.

(And tbe president is starting to see that I am a free soul.)

Bk to free me again...

I guess I just need to have it my way regardless of where I am.
