Happy New Year!

お雑煮、zoni- new year soup

Wishing everyone a prosperous and joyful year ahead!
As a Japanese tradition, we ate noodle (longevity) with shrimp tempura last night,
watched TV, celebrated the new year mark and hit bed last night.
(3 year old was awake till midnight to celebrate too)

This morning, I slept till I naturally woke up (around 9 a.m.) and cooked Japanese
traditional new year dish called ozoni. Each region of japan has different receipt, and
my mom's receipe was all vege soup with mainly soy sauce soup, but this year,
I tried a receipe from my favorite app.
Soup is based off a chicken broth + bonito + kelp with a hint of soy sauce, mirin and
salt topped with boiled carrots, komatsuna spinach, chicken and a slice of yuzu citrus
and mochi cakes (non sweet).
Very good but turns out Hiroto does not like mochi, a rice cake, some thing we Japanese
eat alot in the new year season (and this is the only season we eat mochi).

Today, we will pay a visit to a local shrine to make a new year pray.

All of us are off alll this week though many go back to work on the 4th.
I am going back to work from next Monday and Toru on Tuesday (+ Koki and Hiroto too on Tues.).

Again, Happy New Year!

New Year Card 2019

Finally, I got the new year cards done!! Online!
Every year I wait till the last minute to do this, and when I am done, I always think,
this is not a big deal, I should have done this long time ago....

Now we are ready for Christmas:)
Santa was sent an order through Amazon this Tuesday after realizing there would be
no Santa this year... for Hiroto. Now he is in our closet (Shhh).
Koki found out who Sant is last year, so.

Next Monday (Christmas eve), we are going over to Toru's parents house for Christmas
dinner. His sister and her families coming back from Hong Kong, plus his brother's family
will join from Yokohama. Altogether 6 grandchildren for Toru's parents.

Unfortunately, a petit Christmas party to be held two weekends ago at our house with
my sister + niece and my mom had to be cancelled due to Hiroto being ill but
my mom and my sister showed up for a light lunch on the day since Hiroto's fever
subsided (after this, he came down with stomach flu...).

I have 2 more working days left within 2018.
This year has been another busy year, but good year closing with my career flowing
smoothly with the new startup.
I am starting to fall in the eldest layer of working world in japan especially at startups.
My current boss is 30 and many of co-workers in late 20s to late 30s.

Being in mid 40s, married with children, I seem to be the "Extraterritorial" person in the
work environment making many troubled 30 something co-workers confiding
the personal of personal issues to me over lunch or a coffee,
which at the beginning surprised me but now I understand.

Japan society is still very much conservative with old fashioned concept of a woman
should get married before she hit 30 line.... this is so in the air but in reality
women do not live that way any more.

From hearing the "real" from 30 somethings, I feel both women and men deviate from
each other by being caught up in the concept, not seeing who they really are.

Japan really, really needs to change, we need to find a way to free ourselves more
from this "conceptual" conservative norm and break free from being caught up in
the old "concept".

I see arising group living the way they think right or feel good, but that needs to come
down to grass root level.

I  am starting to think how I can contribute to that, being just a normail, non-influencial
individual.

Halloween Cake by Koki

師走、2018 ending...

Helping out a small deli, Nov 8

It's already December! 2018 is ending soon, again, wow, years fly.
This year, I got lucky in the last quarter part of it, found a real nice job, I am happy.
It has been 2 months since I started and so far so good.
I am starting to remember faces (50+ staff) and people are starting to recognize me as "English" person, as I am the only bilingual person being able to translate E to J or J to E (to be exact, there is one other young guy who is semi-bilingual in the marketing dept but he does not translate).
Surprisingly enough, it is working out for me well at a Japanese start up company.

Next Thursday, I am meeting up with my ex-coworkers from 10 years ago with craft beer in Gotanda.
I don't get to go out so often so I am looking forward to it!
I had to skip my current workplace's year end party but no regrets there.

Have a great weekend.

3歳, just turned 3

It has been a month since I started going to the new work place in Shinbashi.
I am working on a localization project of an app and website plus translation of online articles about ski resorts in Japan.
The company I work for focuses on inbound business which is one of the very few growing sector in Japan.

Although my wage is lower than ever, my job satisfaction is higher than ever. I very much like the fact that I can focus on one type of job, translation.
I do not have to take calls, greet clients, serve tea or take minutes etc.
My past bilingual position required all these admin tasks that had to be done by someone which was sometimes me or someone else if available just because I never called myself a translator or interpreter.

After all these years, I realize all I had to do was to tell myself that I was a translator not a bilingual administrator or a secretary...

Anyway, I am gradually fitting into this energetic/ emerging startup rapidly growing with new staff constantly joining and the office packed with 50+ ppl.

On the other side, the social media company I helped to establish here in Tokyo is facing the most challenging moment ever since it started here.
Things change and people move on in both life and business but in business, you have to come up with a solution to continue.
I am hoping the CEO will come up with a clever solution to fill in the important piece we lost.

I have always been the one to drop the ball, but it seems the table is turning now. I feel the pain and I feel sorry for all the people I dropped the ball on in the past, though it was inevitable.

You know, and again, things happen in life, so many things but we all anyhow move on. Time passes, you look back and realize that eventually triggered next phase of your journey. Things happen for a reason, really, no matter how hard it hits you, you will anyhow crawl out of it if you don't give up.

Hiroto turned 3 this month, on the 5th!
3 years in life! Cheers.

Half step forward

Took a trial lesson, an entrance exam, got accepted into the 2nd level class at one of interpretation training school at end of September but looking at an exam result score, decided to pass this time.
The school is aiming to train interpreters to do broadcast simultaneous translation or big international conference in which usually translator use headphone/mic to interpret from a booth.
At the end of the whole entrance process, I could not push myself to imagine myself gettin to that level, or in other words, wanting to be an interpreter at that level. Though, it had always been my desire to be a pro interprepter, I realized that was purely out of a job impression without knowing what it really requires to be one...

I could give 1000 excuses I gave up on this idea, but at the end of the day, it all came down to "not feeling comfortable with the idea". Also the budet played a big roll, I admit. At age of 44, I have to calculate my investment against my time and potential return of investment. I realize when I first took a course back in college with my parents money, I wasn't thinking from that perspective (too young to think...) and took for granted that such opportunity should rise to me (being bilingual back then was still more of a big deal than now days). But now I make my own money and running a family being in mid 40s, I fully realize time is limited and should be used wisely. Same goes for money.

At the same timing as passing an entrance exam, I got hired by an IT company based in Shinbashi, as J to E translator. In the same week, I received a fairly big J E to J translation project from a translation company (freelance work). This made me realize there are already lots of demands for me being a "translator" which I should fulfill.

I take one step forward and take three steps back, but there is always something inbetween these steps, so no waste there.

Keep on going. Life is short, enjoy, cherish, and try to live it to the fullest while it lasts.
