Obon Break

Backjoy

they are for you to keep

Being in middle of Obon break here in Tokyo,
many of our neighbors are away and
a 2 block away, always lively shopping street
is vacant,
and here we are, enjoying quiet Tokyo.

I like staying in Tokyo during this break and
also during a GW in May where everyone is away
and I can trespass to all these places which always
have crowd of people otherwise.

To start my break, I went to get pedicure done
at a new salon in a neighborhood,
then we went on a small shopping spree to buy
some things we needed ended up buying a little
bit more than that.

Koki's got a little cosmos projector,
Toru's got a new expensive shampoo,
I got Backjoy seater for my sometime aching back.

Yesterday, I went to the office to cover for the
owner/school director who had to leave by noon.
Before she left, she gave me a set of key for me to keep.

Because I have always worked with small business
owners (except one occasion when I worked as a
dispatch worker from an agency),
this is typical that they give me keys after working
with them for several months,
or some of them gave keys right away.

From here, now the question is will this office space
become my second home?
I figured if I could not make myself comfortable
enough at the office, I won't last long there.
(This is one of the reasons why I never lasted at
big corporations)

Speaking with my boss who is a business owner of
more than one business and also with a nail salon
owner,
they both told me it would have been just too tough
for them to work everything out if they went to
work for someone else and that is one of the reasons
they started their own business.

This made me, "ah!".
I never thought of that, having my own business!
But then next moment I realize I don't have any business
idea, haha, dream fades so quickly.

When I was still living in California and when Toru and I
decided to move back to Japan,
I was seriously planning to open a cafe/ shop/ design office
near the beach in my hometown.
This is laughable once we are in Japan, but you know,
back in America, I was so so serious about this idea.
I knew back then already, seeing people the way they lived
in California, that I could no longer live like
how I used to...

I just had to live the way that fitted me, I couldn't stand any
workplace that had to bend the way I saw/felt comfortable,
regardless of what it provides me with or the outcome
of giving up that opportunity.

Well, here I am, 10 years later back in Tokyo, away from
California, doing, not too bad, not bad at all,
though it still entices me to think about having my own
business ;)

We are going to the beach tomorrow,
swayed by waves and California dreaming...

Say what you need to say

1 month flies

Don't punch him(お友達をぶたないで)ではなく、
Please be nice to him(お友達には優しくしようね)と言う。

It's been a month since we moved in, time flies!
We have been putting boxes away over the weekends
and busy going to work on weekdays,
no more space for anything else...
Both Toru and I started our summer vacation from Saturday
and we will be on it till this Sunday, one week.
One week may sound too short for those of you living in US
or Europe but it is actually longer than many other Japanese
workers (typical Obon vacation for most companies is
13th to 17th).

I was discussing with Toru the other night over dinner if
we Japanese really work too long hours or it is just perception
in our minds (Japanese people like to think that they are the
hardest workers in the world).
I know lots of non Japanese who work longer hours (especially
small business owners), but when it comes to employee
status workers, I just don't know. There is no way to compare.
All I know is Toru works too much, he starts from 10am and
stays at the office minimum 9pm these days, often later.
But in our discussion we kinda figured that an aspiring mid-size
IT company may need to more to get to where it wants to,
not to say all its employees share the same goal, but.

I just think it is unnatural for a man who has a family
to not to be able to either have a breakfast or dinner together
with his family except for weekends.
I know in my dad's time Japan was building its economy to be
on world standard level and everyone worked like ants but
the time has changed and so did the economy.

Anyway, enough for my complaints.

Koki made his debut to the international school I work at in the
3rd week of July because his kindergarten school is closed
during the summer break.
Astonishingly enough, he only claimed once that he did not
want to go because it was almost all English environment and
made friends right away.
I asked Koki how he communicates with his friend Charlie
and he said,
"I don't know, we just do, like we both like Spyderman!".
Yup, that's the way, my son.

I am always mesmerized about Koki's adaptability.
He always loved people and this is the main source of his high
level of adaptability, I think.
The other thing about children, so amazing, is that they don't
have yet a clear sense of race, nationality or difference in
many cultures and they see people as they are, fundamentally
as one individual. Such a beautiful thing.
Because it is an international school located in central Tokyo,
it has students with various backgrounds coming from different
parts of the world.
It is a good opportunity for Koki to be in such environment even
for just one summer.

It would make so many things easier and more accessible later in
life if you were introduced to biculturality earlier in your life.
I think biculturality is more important than bilinguality because
I know so many people who are bilingual yet in their minds
they are not open.

Now the question is how do we keep it going without sending
him to an international school which is just too over the head
in terms of budget.

Well, we'll figure it out as we always have till now!

最後の週末、last weekend in Yokohama

荷造り、packing up

On our last weekend in Yokohama, Koki came down with
a high fever. Poor Koki, he couldn't make it to his own farewell party.
I took him for the last half an hour of the school hours (finishes at 2 pm on non work day) so he could play a bit and say goodbye to his friends.

Koki's friends and their moms made farewell collage for us. So sweet of them.
We'll miss them.
Koki is looking forward to a summer festival this school is holding at a park on July 20th, a 3-day weekend.

Mover is coming at 8AM tomorrow and we will be at our new home from noon or so tomorrow.

完成!Our house complete!

Our house is now complete!
We checked around the house to see if the house was put up according to the blue print last Wed and on Sat the house was ours.

We are very happy with the outcome, especially the staircases and 2nd floor's floor being a genuine wood thanks to our architect who negotiated hard so that the staircases could also use the genuine wood (initially our budget only covered the 2nd floor). Thus makes such a difference as a genuine wood feels soft and warm on feet.

We are scheduled to move in next Tues, Jul 8th. We still need to put blinds and roll curtains in 2nd floor (big windows), put a name plate outside (for mails; our address is same as the next door so this is necessary), install internet, buy a freg, and put tiles on a kitchen wall ( this, I'll do little by little after moving in).

Koki is sad about saying goodbye to friends he made in Yokohama and so am I.
Koki jumped in and got adjusted.
He enjoyed playing outside all day catching insects and playing with crafts (no games or TV) with his friends.
I think it was a great experience for Koki even if only for 1year.

It took a while for me to be acquainted with moms of Koki's friends at school but now  I know them better, I enjoy their companies time to time and this is very rare for me as I usually tend to keep a distance from new companies and stick with my old friends.

I am appreciative for them about showing me it is actually fun to make new friends, share and grow together as a mom.

I think I am more relaxed about all this and keep a good relationship while keeping my own pace.

Cheers for that and new life ahead!

梅雨の気配、sign of coming rain season

With nonce a week in Shibuya, twice a week in Hiroo,
plus other freelance projects,
my schedule has been frantic past 2 weeks.
I am quitting one of them at end of this week and
funny enough, my friend is taking over the same
job (I introduced her to the owner).

In my 16 years or so working career, there is only
one Japanese boss I got along with.
Since then, I tried working with Japanese bosses
in various situations, but anyhow never worked out.
And this job I am quitting is run by a young bilingual
Japanese guy who's studied overseas and has a branch
office in India, and yet eventually it didn't work out.

I've been wondering about this, why I don't get along.
I do admit that I am not a typical
Japanese type per say, but I do have Japanese friends
and my family has been based in Japan except for few years
in my adolescence years.

And this morning, in a radio show, a guy named Peter Barakan
(a bilingual broadcaster based in Tokyo) was talking about
a difference of modesty in Japan and other countries.

When Japanese show modesty they lower themselves where
others (esp Europeans and Americans) tend to show by
praising others.
He also said this is because Japan is a vertical society (based
on where people are placed, not by their nature),
where European or American society, people are connected
horizontally.

This is partly because we have what's called "keigo", a honorific
speech, which we often use to show respect to the counter
part (highest rank is the elderly, second rank is whoever is on
higher position than you are in society i.e. your boss, politician,
lawyer etc., then someone you don't know. For example,
when I call to make a reservation at a restaurant, I use
this honorific speech because the person I am speaking to
is not my friend or family.)

Anyway, I always felt all this prevents us from taking down
the walls between people and being more frank and open to each
other for a better future and better whatever.
Although I admit that this is one of the elements that makes
Japanese culture unique and beautiful, and that European
and American societies also have honorific speech to some
extent.

Anyhow, it was tough for me to work in such domestic
environment and now I am working for 1 American, 1 Canadian,
1 Polish and 1 German in Tokyo.

I have a feeling I will always be inbetween those 2 worlds.

This is a drawback of being bicultural (not just bilingual, because
being bilingual does not automatically make you bicultural).

Japan is yet still conservative society although it is changing
in some ways. It would be interesting to know what younger
generations are feeling and thinking since it is said that
younger generations are more domestic minded.

I am just happy to be over with that part time job which
never did me any good... cheers!

五月晴れ、sunny days of May

This weekend we went to look at wall papers, only to find
out it is hard to choose...
Those ones we definitely want is too over the budget
and rest is just not too different from each other.
We'll let our architect pick.
He knows better about the selection of the wall paper
and also our budget.

I started out slowly with my new job of assisting an owner
of an international school (for babies, toddlers, up to kinder-
garten age) located in central Tokyo.

Because the owner and I share the same vibe (or something),
it feels just so natural to be working together.
My co-worker is also very positive spirited and all together
creates a good work environment.

My side jobs (one of them used to be primary but now almost
no work) suddenly picked up and everyone suddenly became
demanding.
I was ready to finally live a moderately busy life with a fixed
job schedule with my job, but destiny did not let me, I guess.

And I get a call in the morning of Friday last week from
Koki's day care telling me he got injured on his chin and
in his mouth from falling from piled up boxes.
The care taker told me he is alright and his chin stopped
bleeding but mouth still bleeds a little.
They will keep an eye on him and lets me know if anything
changes.
So, I carried on to my new work place.

At noon, I followed up with a phone call to the day care.
Said all OK, he is playing with other kids lively.
In 15 minutes, his class teacher called back and said he can't
eat because his mouth hurt.

His right bottom tooth (2 of them) were loose, his chin abraded.
Poor little guy, but he was happily playing with other kids
when I picked him up.

I will take him to a dentist again this Friday to check again.
Worst case scenario, if the dental nerve of two loose teeth are
dead (we will know once when his permanent teeth come out
under the loose teeth), then a special treatment needs to be done
on these teeth.

This week my work schedule is down to 2 days a week (at
the new work place, an international school) and
I'll deal with other tasks at home.
