Tokyo, the heaviest snow since 1894

Tokyo spent another weekend in snow.
A record breaking snowfall since 1894.
Koki's day care closed down due to the expected
snowfall by the morning of Friday and that was
a right move. By 5PM on Friday, the accumulated
snow was so high that I asked Toru to take a bus
home.
Koki was thrilled to see the snow wanting to do a
snow sled which he tried in Nagano last weekend
when we went to ski up in a mountain, but
he has been coughing pretty badly since Thursday
night so I waited until this afternoon when it is
warmer for him to play a bit with snow.

I have a new job now.
I was hired by the entrepreneur guy who runs a small
IT company in Shibuya, Tokyo whom I met last Tuesday
morning for an interview.
I will start Monday coming up, probably 3-4 times a
week, several hours a day, which still leaves me some
room to continue my current work for Jack whom I
have been helping run the business since December 2011.

We'll see how this will change our rather relaxed life cycle.

Good night.

Kijimadaira, a snow mountain

A cold front

眠い... fresh out of bed

My goodness, Tokyo has been freezing for last few days.
Minus C every morning, makes us hard to get out of bed
every morning.
I realize living inside a building is warmer than a standalone(?)
house. Foot warmers are indispensable at night.

I had a job interview Tuesday morning with a small IT
company run by a 34-5ish Japanese guy.
He seemed very busy and full of energy, a typical
entrepreneur type.
He said a staff he has now is leaving half time to seek a
freelancing position on a side, so he needs someone to fill in
when that person doesn't come.
What they do was interesting enough although some projects
seemed non profitable. He kept saying an entrepreneur has to
always take challenges and try something new.

I couldn't quite understand why he needed someone bilingual
but he kept telling me that nowdays you can't get around if
you were not bilingual and that he thinks women nowdays are
better than men and he would like to work with women rather
than men. Hmmm, I don't know about that, but that is what
many magazine likes to use for headlines anyhow.

I met with Jack, the guy I help business with on freelance
basis (bilingual support), yesterday for
lunch and he told me he may have to take in an outside money
(investment) to keep the cash flow going.
He sounded like this is an ultimate plan but if avoidable, by all
means he'd like to avoid.

Then, I received an email from a company from my last job
search (last October) asking me about my current situation.
Turns out someone they hired is moving out of Tokyo due to
her husband's relocation and they are looking for someone
to fill in.

So many things happening simultaneously this winter.
We'll see how everything settles.

Today is a day before spring started in an old calendar
and Koki and I made fortune rolls for dinner, threw
beans to drive devil away bring in the fortune.

Last week, Koki and I were again at my parents' house.
My hometown is surrounded by hills and to the south is
Sagami Bay. Plus, there are many temples and shrines
and coming back to this small town balances out my
energy every time I come back.

In my last Japanese-only update,
I mentioned about my current life with sparse work (freelance)
and almost house-wife like lifestyle...
So not me, I wrote,
especially when I am chatting with mothers
of Koki's soccer school (every Thursday afternoon) about
house work, cooking, preschool, after-school classes etc.,
it makes me feel anyhow uncomfortable and unproductive.

I dunno.
I like sharing useful information, of course, but when you are
talking 1 hour constantly, it becomes.... so boring, and it
makes me want to be productive.
I guess I am just not used to not making money after all.
I feel uncomfortable spending time and money when I am not
making any money.

So, I updated my CV and sent out to several places last
week for the ??th time in my life.
Now I am getting ready for two coming up interviews
this week. One at 10:30AM tomorrow.
I don't remeber how many timesI've done a job search but now it becomes almost like an
auto- update to revise my resume.

Japan is struggling to come out of this long, depressing
non improving economy, but in spite of his inconsiderate
foreign policy, Prime Minister Abe seems to be doing at
least something right about the economy of Japan.
There seems to be more job posts at Hello Work
(Employemnt Service Center run by the government)
compared tothe last time I was doing a job search
(last summer).

Wish me luck on interviews!
Good night.

我が家- その後, our house- current status

I was looking back on my old blogs and found
a photo of a house mock-up, the first floor plan from our
architect and I thought, we have come a long way.

Our house looks different from the mock up in many ways
now. We have massaged the floor plan so much, so many
times to pursue functionality and living comfort.
Our current floor plan must be 10th or so and it was
finally submitted for a final proof from the government
and now it is ready to be built.

Of course, we will probably have minor changes still, but
on a big picture, no more. After the plan passes the
construction test by the government, we can't move a
pillar or a big wall.

So, we are working on deciding on kitchen, toilette, etc.

First floor toilette is in a bathroom, so it has to be a
small tank toilette but one on second floor is in a small
individual room, so it can be inexpensive bulky type.

Kitchen, we are giving a second thought to IKEA kitchen.
Evaluation on internet is rather low, for its cheap quality,
especially around a sink.

Since we won't be installing a dish washing machine
(no budget...) and I'll be cooking at least 5 days out of 1
week (or possibly more),
I'll be using sink heavily for not only washing dishes and
veges but also pouring out a boiled water etc.
However, IKEA has its low evaluation points mostly on
its sink system (besides cumbersome drawer system etc.)
and we can't manage to have such system.

Even IKEA personnel confided that they received many
complaints about their plumbing system in the past
(many of which were that if you poured out a pan of water
into a sink or if you rinse a pile of dishes at a time,
quickly a sink becomes a pool which makes you
stand there and wait for a few minutes for the water
to drain) and
recommended that we buy a Japanese maker one and
install ourselves.

Installing a plumbing system ourselves is not an option
for us (and many Japanese I think, Japan is not really a
DIY country), so I went back to see a Japanese kitchen
maker once again and requested a quote.

We plan to finally start the construction from February,
but before that we must set up a day to do a Jichinsai
which is a ceremony to purify the land by a shrine priest.

They say the temperature is going to drop very low
early in the morning and
and snow will fall tomorrow morning.
Toru left for work at 8PM tonight and if it snows, I
need to go pick him up at the station in the morning.

Better hit bed soon.

I finalized our VE and we decided to go with IKEA
kitchen (artificial marble stone work top and either
coated white melamine coated wood panels, or
black wood panels).
Kitchen furniture by Japanese makers have attractive
functions but their designs are too plane and boring.
This is why we chose IKEA. Their design is not the
greatest, yet better than those by Japanese makers.
Of course, if money was not an issue, I am sure
there are Japanese maker who make beautiful kitchen
furniture.

A gas range (top) and a gas oven, we'll order online
(HARMAN, a Japanese maker).
Bath system (all in one) either TOTO (the biggest
Japanese brand) or INAX depending on the price
the builder gives us.
Toilette system (1st and 2nd floor) probably Panasonic
(yes, an electronic appliance company; they also make
bath tubs and toilette and many other things), we'll
order online. We want tank-free system to
save us room in both rooms.
Bathroom heater (yes, winter in Tokyo is very cold),
an optional, but maybe we can wait
to install till later (around 450 USD).

Our budget is very tight, so we'll probably add and drop
things as we go, but our architect is going to negotiate
with a builder to include as much as he can.

We gave up on having an open string staircase (the type
that has space between stair cases to let light come through)
due to restrictions from earthquake resistant construction
and also the budget (in other words, it is expensive to install
an open string staircase which is earthquake resitatnt).

Instead, we decided to put a big window on a wall facing south
and change a wooden living room door to a acrylic opaque door
to let light in.

We'll meet with our architect this weekend and then will meet
with an IKEA kitchen consultant next next Saturday.
