Handing over

This morning I am at a clinic waiting for a health check up provided by the ward office. This clinic is the clinic I came for a check up every other week and then gave birth to Hiroto almost a year ago (November 5th).  I was also here when I had a muscarriage a few years before Hiroto was born, but even through that, I think this clinic is the best clinic in our area and I keep coming back here for check ups.

I was planning to leave today and tomorrow free to get done things that have been set aside but even after doing over time to do the handover yesterday, I was asked to come bk again today after my check up to help the advisor guy in Roppongi.
He did not seem so busy, I wonder if I am just called in to listen to his complaints about all things in his life (sigh...).
I could say no but I owe it to him that surprisingly and fortunately I found next opportunitu so swiftly in less than 30days from the day i annoynced my resignation.

Having worked 2 days in a row with an hour over time on the last day already making me tired. My eyes are tired with a minor migrane.
My boss gets upset with minor things and he seems not being able to let go of minor unrelated things and omplains so much that smetimes it is more enegy taking to having to listen to him than to simply work.

Sigh...now done with checkup heading to Rpoppongi...

First pair of shoes

Hiroto got his first pair of shoes this weekend, tried them on at a nearby park yesterday. He had difficulty putting his foot out at the beginning but soon picked up and went around a bench, then to a field with me holding his hands.
Thesr tiny steps must mean a great deal for him, broadening his world.
He recently started walking, at his 10th month, early steps for a baby.
Koki walked at his 9th month.
Our boys have strong feet.

Koki`s sports event got cancelled due to rain. I was so happy.
One sports event per year is enough for me. Next year we will check on No to attendance.

We had not seen the sun for two weeks or so here in tokyo until yestetday.
In Japan we have rain in between sesons, now is summer to autumn season rain.

Oh, I gotta go.
My last week in Roppongi, wrapping up work. From next week Ill be real busy with new work strting.

Bye for now.

Autumn rain is prevailing this week.

Umbrellas everywhere everyday.

I was happy that this rain will carry over to this coming weekend cancelling a sports event at Kokis after school.program which we must participate because I am given a role.

I am starting to be stressed aboutthings related to school and this program.

I was crossing my finger it will rain but looks like it will be cloudy but no rain possibly sunny.

I would seriously consider putting my kids in a private school if we were well off.  I dont know about other countries but here, expensive private schools ask for donations besides expensive tuitions but parents dont have to get involved at all (and thats why they make you pay).

My mom is a tough woman and I remember when I was little, my sisters and I had to go through tough situations often because my mom was not to put up with this public school double sided inefficient system (and yes, the system has been the same since ancient times).

I wish I had the same iron heart as my mom and say no to things that are on the front a volunteer out of good will participation but in reality mandatory.

Last weekend Koki went to matsuri with his friends, enjoyed it. My feet tired from carrying Hiroto plus walking, chatting with moms.

Because moms come all come from dicferent backgrounds, not everyone gets along but we all at least try to be harmless to each other for our own children. Of course, some may become good friends but I try to keep a certain distance to keep things simple, friendly enough but not closer but this becomes tricky when a mom wants to be closer just becuse her son is a good friend with Koki.

Sleep overs....now our turn but I am so reluctant about inviting kids over. Mendokusai is the word in Japanese, too much trouble.

I dont dislike kids in general but I have enough going on with my own children. Houses Koki went to sleep over, both moms emailed and asked any allergy, likings and duslikings in food,  cooked dinner and breakfast. I told Koki, at my house, it will be pizza and salad for dinner, toast and fruit for breakfast, American style :)

I just dont plan to `take orders`. Plus, looking at Koki, kids tend to not eat  much at other ppls houses (they like moms cooking the best ususlly).

I remenber my ex American boss (a mom) complaining about this as well. Japanese women, they are still old fashioned, try too hard to do everything perfectly. We moms work too hard already...

Again, Im in a way a misfit to this society.

Japanese society is sometimes too group oriented. You have to watch others and make sure you dont stand out.

I watch myself carefully but often I feel crammed, makes me want to stretch and do whatwver, say whatever, live however, but with children, I must be careful because having an odd parent puts his her kids put them in a spot (and I know this from my experience).

Well, we dont plan to relicate outside Japan, so I must find a balance. Work and friends good source of balance and of course my family.

a CD Drive....

I finally got hold of Jack who has been MIA for past
several weeks. I needed to pick up an external hard
drive from him so I can move files accumulating on
my Mac, files worth of past 4 years.... taking up
memories on my laptop.
But, it turns out he handed me a CD drive..aw naw!
I was looking forwarding to clear my laptop memory,
dang!

This weekend is a 3 day weekend and there is a
"matsuri" in our neighborhood and Koki will join
a parade with mikoshi (a portable shring) tomorrow,
then he will sleep over his friend's house at night.
It will be a quiet Saturday night without him.

I am hoping to hit the ocean once more before it gets
more chilly.

Have a great weekend!

新学期、back to school

Back to school, kids are busy busy everyday.

Two weekends ago, we went to the beach in a pursuit of
fading summer. We have autumn rain almost
everyday now.  We miss summer.

Koki learned to swim this year first at school PE class.
Then at the beach, he body surfed with me, such a delight.

I used to think it will be challenging for him to swim or body
surf in the ocean even more, but kids grow!
We parents should not under estimate or make assumption
about kids. They grow.

My work schedule slowing down again (never picked up I should
say).
I started around mid June in Roppongi, twice or less a week, and
the other company I help from home (Jack) missing in action
for last few months.
Since Hiroto goes to daycare, and Koki to after school program,
it is pointless for me to work in such slow schedule, so I picked
up my job search wand again.

I figured I want to work for a bigger company this time, so I
decided go through a recruitment agency. I signed up with the
biggest name in the market.
I met with a consultant and soon they introduced me to some
opportunities including Accenture and Oracle, but I picked out
a different US company subsidiary which is located within 30
minutes commute area from my home.
They pay less than Accenture or Oracle but instead they have
more flexible work schedule with almost no over time.
My consultant sounded reluctant about passing my resume to
the company (I guess they get paid more if they place me in
Accenture or Oracle because their hourly wage was bit higher),
but I went in for an interview yesterday and I got hired!

I was hoping to find a position that lets me start out as a temp
but later can grow into a full time (permanent) employee, but
as a start, I guess this is good enough.

I will start from October 1 (3rd to be exact), 10am to 4pm with
1 hour recess for lunch, Monday through Friday.
I am hoping I will get adjusted to their corporate environment
and work schedule soon.

大阪と台風、bk to Tokyo, typhoon season

Osaka, Shinsekai
Typhoon after typhoon as we came back from Osaka trip. Osaka was sunny and very very hot.
Food was fantastic (okonomi yaki and tako yaki, two types of non sweet pancakes from western Japan, popular snack food in Japan).

We walked around a lot, till pretty late everyday in Osaka.
Osaka is located in west of Japan and they speak with Kansai (western) accent. What I or my families speak is called hyojungo, a standard Japanese, and then Kansai ben is what they speak in west. To me, Kansai accent is a bit like California accent if hyojungo spoken in Tokyo was considered New York accent. Osaka has its own distinctive culture. Also, people seemed more friendly and open
than Tokyo.

Toru took Koki to Universal Studio Japan on 2nd day of our stay.
Hiroto and I went to see an old friend of mine from university
who moved to Kobe (next to Osaka) seven years ago due to her
husband's career. She now has a 4 year old daughter and 7 year
old (same age as Koki) son and has a house near a bridge called
Akashi Bridge which connects theJapan mainland, honshu, to
Awaji Island which is famous for growing olives and moderate
temperature.
Hiroto and I said good bye to my friend around 2:30pm and
joined Koki and Toru at USJ around 3:30pm. It was so sunny and
so hot that there was 30m line in front of a vending machine.
It was a good idea that I bought 4 bottles of water to bring in.

Last time we took a trip out of Japan was in 2011. Since then
Toru and I speak about going overseas again, LA or Hawaii, or
possibly South France where our friends are, but anyhow
we have not been able to make it out of Japan.
Now with Hiroto being a baby, it makes things a bit more difficult.
It is certainly doable, but it is just easier to travel inside Japan
as Japan is one of the safest countries in the world where you
don't have to worry about robbery or safety.
Plus, traveling by a car or a train is just so much easier with
small children (an of course easier on a wallet as well).

Toru mentioned maybe Guam next year? but hmmm I dunno.
There are so many places in japan to see, so I am leaning
towards another domestic trip.

We'll see.

Koki's back to school tomorrow.
Hiroto already went back to his day care after long 14 days
holiday (yes, that is considered LONG in Japan. Many people
only take 4,5 days, crazy, no?).

Koki made a debut to a sleep over to his friend this Monday.
He took his favorite blue elephant with him so he could sleep.
Result? He had so much fun, wants to do it again!
He wants to bring his friends over next time.
Maybe when Toru is around, on a 3 day weekend or something.

Although he struggled to get his summer load of homework,
he is still having so much fun being a 7 year old boy in summer.
Children are talented at making an ordinary into fun.

初お泊り、a sleep over!

Obon break coming up!

Morning break at Starbukcs

We are in 2nd week of August already, half way through
Koki's summer break. Koki still had two big chunk of
homework left to be done.
He complains with so much homework it is not really a
break, just a non school period.
I dont understand why the school make the first graders
study so much. They should play, that is part of their duty.

Our family break startz this week with me starting
tomorrow with Koki, then Hiroto and Toru from Thursday.

Koki made a swimming debut this year and though he
showed fear for going under water at the beginning,
he gradually got used to it and now he can dive, kick etc.
He had 4 day intensive swimming lesson starting tomorrow.

I saw fewer crowd on train and at a Starbucks this morning
so some people probably started their break already.

Summer is really hot in Tokyo sometimes hitting 95F in
this concrete surrounding. And with so much humidity,
the heat really takes away your energy.
But once inside so chilly with aircon in full blowing mode,
it can drive your body crazy.
I try to wear long sleeves even in summer to avoid getting
sick from this temperture difference.

Nexy week, we are planning to either drive or take a bullet
train(shinkansen) to Osaka to take Koki to Universal Studio
Japan where he is looking forward to Dragon Ball attraction.
Osaka is in west pary of Japan and is supposed to be
hotter than Tokyo.

And yes, we have Universal Studio in Japan.
We also have Disneyland in Chiba (next to Tokyo) .
Recently USJ attracts more visitors than Disneyland.

The question is, is there vacancy at hotel and shinkansen,,,
