Don't punch him(お友達をぶたないで)ではなく、
Please be nice to him(お友達には優しくしようね)と言う。
It's been a month since we moved in, time flies!
We have been putting boxes away over the weekends
and busy going to work on weekdays,
no more space for anything else...
Both Toru and I started our summer vacation from Saturday
and we will be on it till this Sunday, one week.
One week may sound too short for those of you living in US
or Europe but it is actually longer than many other Japanese
workers (typical Obon vacation for most companies is
13th to 17th).
I was discussing with Toru the other night over dinner if
we Japanese really work too long hours or it is just perception
in our minds (Japanese people like to think that they are the
hardest workers in the world).
I know lots of non Japanese who work longer hours (especially
small business owners), but when it comes to employee
status workers, I just don't know. There is no way to compare.
All I know is Toru works too much, he starts from 10am and
stays at the office minimum 9pm these days, often later.
But in our discussion we kinda figured that an aspiring mid-size
IT company may need to more to get to where it wants to,
not to say all its employees share the same goal, but.
I just think it is unnatural for a man who has a family
to not to be able to either have a breakfast or dinner together
with his family except for weekends.
I know in my dad's time Japan was building its economy to be
on world standard level and everyone worked like ants but
the time has changed and so did the economy.
Anyway, enough for my complaints.
Koki made his debut to the international school I work at in the
3rd week of July because his kindergarten school is closed
during the summer break.
Astonishingly enough, he only claimed once that he did not
want to go because it was almost all English environment and
made friends right away.
I asked Koki how he communicates with his friend Charlie
and he said,
"I don't know, we just do, like we both like Spyderman!".
Yup, that's the way, my son.
I am always mesmerized about Koki's adaptability.
He always loved people and this is the main source of his high
level of adaptability, I think.
The other thing about children, so amazing, is that they don't
have yet a clear sense of race, nationality or difference in
many cultures and they see people as they are, fundamentally
as one individual. Such a beautiful thing.
Because it is an international school located in central Tokyo,
it has students with various backgrounds coming from different
parts of the world.
It is a good opportunity for Koki to be in such environment even
for just one summer.
It would make so many things easier and more accessible later in
life if you were introduced to biculturality earlier in your life.
I think biculturality is more important than bilinguality because
I know so many people who are bilingual yet in their minds
they are not open.
Now the question is how do we keep it going without sending
him to an international school which is just too over the head
in terms of budget.
Well, we'll figure it out as we always have till now!
